His business has been open for more than 20 years but recently Mr Jenkins rent has increased by \u00a32,000 a year.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhitchurch has always been a thriving area,\u201d said Mr Jenkins, who thinks that increasing rents and rates are driving businesses out of the village.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe want shops, not empty units, to bring people into the village,\u201d said Mr Jenkins.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/enc2UmKwpkw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/enc2UmKwpkw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Village Gift Box is surrounded by two empty units on either side. However, the neighbouring health foods store chose to leave the village at the end of their lease and a new buyer has not been found since September 2017.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThings can be tough in business and retail,\u201d said Mr May, who thinks that Cardiff Council should do more to support small businesses.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr May\u2019s sentiments are echoed by the owners of Deli a GoGo. The business has to pay \u00a3300 for waste disposal, a service many in the village believe should be included in business rates.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The small business rate relief Deli a GoGo receives from the Welsh Government has also fallen from \u00a32,000 to \u00a3600. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is no government help to keep the village going,\u201d said Mrs Davidson<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While their \u00a31,500 a month rent has not gone up, Mrs Davidson points out that it has not gone down, which is stopping small businesses \u201cthriving.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mrs Davidson admits that all this has been \u201chard to swallow as a small business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SMALL business owners in Whitchurch Village believe high rents and business rates are not helping the High Street.
