{"id":25614,"date":"2018-02-16T16:48:35","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T16:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=25614"},"modified":"2018-02-16T16:48:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T16:48:35","slug":"ex-government-accountant-jailed-1-3m-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/02\/16\/ex-government-accountant-jailed-1-3m-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Welsh accountant jailed for \u00a31.3m Bermuda fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AN accountant who had worked for the Welsh Government and the BBC was today jailed for seven years and four months for laundering \u00a31.3 million to UK bank accounts.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jeffrey Bevan, 50, a father of two from Cwmbran, Torfaen, committed the offences between 2011 and 2013 while working as an accountant in the Bermuda Government.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cardiff Crown Court heard that Bevan committed 52 fraudulent transactions while working as a payment manager in the department of the Accountant General of Bermuda.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Judge Michael Fitton told Bevan he had betrayed the trust the Bermuda government and his family had placed in him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His \u00a380,000 a year salary role in Bermuda included the overseeing of a new computer financial system known as EnterpriseOne.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bevan used his \u201csuperuser\u201d status on the system to alter transactions and transfer money to his and his wife\u2019s UK bank accounts.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Earlier in the trial he claimed colleagues had approved a total sum of \u00a31.8 million payments for working overtime.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However he later pleaded guilty to transferring criminal property and converting criminal property a week into the trial.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The judge told Bevan that he &#8220;found it difficult to accept you feel remorse for what you did\u201d and that \u201c(you) must have been enjoying the fruits of your dishonesty\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The judge also pointed to Bevan\u2019s \u201csubstantial gambling habit,\u201d and willingness to pass the blame to others saying Bevan had \u201cin effect fobbed off those asking questions\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe manner in which the overtime was being paid was an unusual method not transparent but involving the abuse and manipulation of the system,\u201d he added.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bevan had previously worked at the BBC for eight years and the Welsh Government for six before going to Bermuda. He is no longer able to practise.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He used the funds stolen from Bermuda to pay off his mortgage in Orchid Court in Ty Canol and buy two Mercedes Benz cars.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He also bought properties in Swansea, Newport, Glasgow and Nottingham to launder his money.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bevan\u2019s financial advisor, Paul Charity, 52 of Bushy Close, Leicester, will be sentenced later today.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AN accountant who had worked for the Welsh Government and the BBC was today jailed for seven years and four months for laundering \u00a31.3 million to UK bank accounts.
