{"id":26169,"date":"2018-02-23T16:35:57","date_gmt":"2018-02-23T16:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=26169"},"modified":"2018-02-23T16:35:57","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T16:35:57","slug":"bargoed-woman-jailed-defrauding-pensioner-17000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/02\/23\/bargoed-woman-jailed-defrauding-pensioner-17000\/","title":{"rendered":"Bargoed woman jailed for \u00a317,000 fraud on pensioner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A 40-YEAR-OLD woman has been jailed for 21 months after defrauding a \u201cvulnerable\u201d 66-year-old man out of about \u00a317,000. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chip shop worker Claire Cox, 40, of Bargoed, was convicted at Cardiff Crown Court this morning of two counts of fraud. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 66-year-old victim was a resident of the Ty Melin home for the elderly in Caerphilly and became friends with Norma Rogers, Cox\u2019s late mother. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 2014, Cox was convicted for seven counts of fraud on elderly people from the same hopme and was given a suspended sentence of 24 months, a supervision order and a community work order. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite being banned from the sheltered accommodations, Cox built up a rapport with the victim when he visited her house with her mother. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first count of fraud Cox was charged with was for obtaining \u00a33,500. The second was for obtaining around \u00a314,000 by reassuring him she could repay him the money once a compensation claim from Caerphilly council worth \u00a318,000 came through. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Janet McDonald, prosecuting, said: \u201cShe took advantage of the complainant&#8217;s vulnerability.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Ms McDonald said Cox had claimed she was in a dire financial situation and needed the money to pay her rent and credit card debts. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Judge Powell QC said her actions amounted to \u201ca systematic targeting of elderly people\u201d she had no intention of paying back.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She had &#8220;lied to the complainant about being able to pay it back\u201d. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The judge said despite Cox having completed her community work order she was in breach of her suspended sentence because \u201cshe had played ducks and drakes with her probation officer\u201d as she had not been honest about her continued financial worries. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 40-YEAR-OLD woman has been jailed for 21 months after defrauding a \u201cvulnerable\u201d 66-year-old man out of about \u00a317,000.
