{"id":26878,"date":"2018-03-06T16:05:45","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T16:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=26878"},"modified":"2018-03-06T16:05:45","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T16:05:45","slug":"meet-stars-cardiffs-new-city-cookbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/06\/meet-stars-cardiffs-new-city-cookbook\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the stars of Cardiff&#039;s new city cookbook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SOME of the city\u2019s best-loved independent caf\u00e9s and restaurants will soon be sharing their recipes with customers, as work begins on a Cardiff cookbook.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sheffield-based Meze Publishing are recruiting local businesses to take part in the Cardiff and South Wales Cookbook, which should reach shelves in summer 2018.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSo far we have a fantastic mix of restaurants, coffee shops, caf\u00e9s, delis, farm shops and more involved,\u201d said Katie Fisher, a food journalist at Meze Publishing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since forming in 2013, the company has released 28 <a href=\"http:\/\/mezepublishing.co.uk\/get-stuck-in-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">regional cookbooks<\/a> from across the UK and beyond.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe books act primarily as a recipe book but also as a guide to the area,\u201d Ms Fisher said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eateries pay to have their recipes featured, and in return get copies of the book to sell.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We spoke to a few who have taken part so far to find out what readers can expect from their pages:<\/span><br \/>\n<b><a href=\"https:\/\/wallysdeli.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wally\u2019s Kaffeehaus and Delicatessen<\/a> (38-46 Royal Arcade)<\/b><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26897\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26897\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-26897 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/Wallys-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26897 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/Wallys-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><\/noscript> The deli stocks a range of continental European and Mediterranean ingredients. Photo: Hannah Butler<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wally\u2019s was the first business to get involved.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe team showed me the books from other towns, so I could see it was really good quality,\u201d said Steven Salamon, who took over the reins of the Morgan Quarter deli from his father Wally in 1995.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve never sold books before, so I thought it would be nice, especially because we\u2019ll be in it.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Kaffeehaus opened in 2011 and serves Mediterranean and European lunches and snacks made from products found in the deli.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of these is the German-themed Eisenstadt open sandwich, which Steven has contributed to the book.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s one of the most popular meals in our caf\u00e9 \u2013 and there\u2019s a bit of a story behind the name \u2026\u201d he said.<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26898\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26898\" style=\"width: 4032px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26898\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/Wallys-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26898\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26898\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/Wallys-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><\/noscript> The delicatessen also sells traditional sweets and speciality Welsh gifts. Photo: Moody Sow<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For this family-run business, it\u2019s Italian meatballs and award-winning scotch eggs on the menu.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shop at Cefn Mably Farm Park produces its own sausages and smoked bacon, makes pies and pasties and sells local farm products.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its scotch eggs won a Great Taste Award in 2014 \u2013 and soon customers can make this deli classic at home.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe good thing about these is that anyone can make them.
