{"id":27125,"date":"2018-03-09T12:52:59","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T12:52:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=27125"},"modified":"2018-03-09T12:52:59","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T12:52:59","slug":"bank-replaces-branch-farcical-one-hour-week-van","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/09\/bank-replaces-branch-farcical-one-hour-week-van\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank replaces branch with &#039;farcical&#039; one-hour-a-week van service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A BANK&#8217;S decision to close a Cardiff suburb&#8217;s branch and replace it with a van parked a mile away for one hour per week has been branded &#8220;farcical&#8221; by residents.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NatWest is replacing its Whitchurch branch with a &#8220;mobile banking van&#8221; parked in a hotel a mile away from the village<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> every Thursday between 12.40pm and 13.40pm.<\/span><br \/>\nCustomers of the bank, which is also closing branches in Llandaff, Rumney and the Heath Hospital, are furious with the decision.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it is absolutely farcical and an insult to their customers who bank with NatWest and have banked with them for very many years,\u201d said Bill Farnham MBE, chairman of Cardiff West Neighbourhood Watch Association.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mobile bank, which will be sited in the Village Hotel&#8217;s car park, will replace the bank\u2019s branch, which is due to close on May 17.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1520590645910!6m8!1m7!1sI-k9JBx6UJFb_K5C6pHBSA!2m2!1d51.52468993379406!2d-3.239446688646358!3f126.49127491748672!4f-3.3030809032112955!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!4v1520590645910!6m8!1m7!1sI-k9JBx6UJFb_K5C6pHBSA!2m2!1d51.52468993379406!2d-3.239446688646358!3f126.49127491748672!4f-3.3030809032112955!5f0.7820865974627469\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h5>The location for the mobile bank, in the Village Hotel car park in Coryton.<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Village Hotel is located a mile further out than the bank\u2019s current branch. The hotel car park is just off the busy Pendwyallt Road connecting to the Coryton Interchange, one of the largest roundabouts in the UK. Residents have raised <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/11\/28\/primary-pupils-urge-drivers-slow\/\">concerns<\/a> about road safety along this busy stretch of road just off the M4 numerous times in the past.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R0-3CHjgucQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R0-3CHjgucQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Farnham worries about the short length of time the mobile bank would be accessible to customers for.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor the mobile bank to be there for only one hour a week is ridiculous,\u201d said Mr Farnham, who questions whether customers will be able to use the bank\u2019s services in that time. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Whitchurch branch on Park Road is one of four across Cardiff to close. Branches in Llandaff, Rumney and University Hospital of Wales in Heath will also be affected.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/charleykaijohn.carto.com\/builder\/d1d417e7-65d9-4a73-96b0-d32fa38652b3\/embed\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/charleykaijohn.carto.com\/builder\/d1d417e7-65d9-4a73-96b0-d32fa38652b3\/embed\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the Whitchurch branch closes the nearest NatWest will be more than two miles away in Llanishen, with Canton and Roath branches being the next nearest three miles away.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NatWest have cited falling branch usage as the reason for closures. The Whitchurch branch was walking distance and easily accessible,\u201d said Mrs Jenkins.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Local politicians have also expressed concern about NatWest\u2019s actions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anna McMorrin, Labour MP for Cardiff North, said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor a bank that is 73% publicly owned, to walk away from the community and customers in Whitchurch is shameful.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I met with the NatWest managers in December, they agreed to work with me and the local community to find the best possible location for the mobile bank.
