{"id":27380,"date":"2018-03-13T11:45:10","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T11:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=27380"},"modified":"2018-03-13T11:45:10","modified_gmt":"2018-03-13T11:45:10","slug":"wales-women-announce-sevens-team-commonwealth-games-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/13\/wales-women-announce-sevens-team-commonwealth-games-first\/","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth Games: Wales Women named in sevens first"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WALES women\u2019s sevens squad has been named for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, which takes place next month on Australia\u2019s Gold Coast.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Women&#8217;s sevens will be played for the first time at the Games since they started 88 years ago.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt&#8217;s excellent to have such a strong Team Wales squad heading to Australia for what will be the first women&#8217;s rugby sevens tournament in the history of the Commonwealth Games,\u201d said Helen Phillips, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Wales Board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wales\u2019s sevens team features an Olympian in Jaz Joyce (all Scarlets), who made her first appearance in the Six Nations in Wales\u2019s 15-22 <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/13\/wales-women-defeated-upstarts-italy\/\">loss<\/a> to Italy on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five of the 12-strong squad are involved in Wales Women\u2019s Six Nations campaign, where Wales currently sit fifth in the table.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Head <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">coach Nick Wakley has a variety of experienced players to pick from, with three of these Six Nations players, Alisha Butchers, Sioned Harries and Elinor Snowsill (Dragons) having over 40 caps each.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shona Powell-Hughes (Ospreys) will also add to her impressive 46 caps after playing in last year\u2019s Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is a real credit to all of the players\u2019 commitment and dedication that they find themselves in these huge global tournaments which could go a long way towards sculpting the environment for the next generation of Welsh women rugby players,\u201d said Mr Wakley. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wales will have a tough group, with Australia, Fiji and England also playing in Pool B Games to be held at the 27,500-capacity Robina Stadium from April 13-15.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before heading to the Gold Coast, Wales\u2019s squad will take part in the Hong Kong Sevens (April 6-8) as the team seek to qualify for next year\u2019s World Rugby Sevens Series.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Team Wales Women\u2019s Sevens:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Alisha Butchers; Elinor Snowsill; Gemma Rowland; Hannah Jones; Jasmine Joyce; Kayleigh Powell; Laurie Harries; Philippa Tuttiett (c); Shona Powell-Hughes; Sian Williams; Sinead Breeze; Sioned Harries.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WALES women\u2019s sevens squad has been named for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, which takes place next month on Australia\u2019s Gold Coast.
