{"id":27744,"date":"2018-03-16T12:30:45","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T12:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=27744"},"modified":"2018-03-16T12:30:45","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T12:30:45","slug":"feeder-schools-plan-ditched-despite-parent-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/16\/feeder-schools-plan-ditched-despite-parent-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeder schools plan ditched despite parent protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FEEDER schools will not be introduced in Cardiff next year, the council has decided.<br \/>\nCouncillors took the decision despite <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/14\/council-accused-ignoring-results-public-consultation-feeder-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">79% voting in favour of them<\/a> in a recent consultation on changes to school admission policy.<br \/>\nAt Thursday\u2019s Cabinet meeting, Labour councillor and Cabinet Member for Education Sarah Merry said she had \u201cagonised over this decision for days\u201d \u2013 but that feeder schools would disadvantage children in faith and Welsh-language primary schools who do not apply to faith or Welsh-language secondaries.<br \/>\nShe also said families moving into the area because of job changes and those seeking asylum would suffer if a feeder system were introduced.<br \/>\n\u201cA case for changing the admissions policy has not been made. Photo: The Corner<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cSarah Merry\u2019s comments have proven that consultations are just there to tick a box, so they don\u2019t mean anything. Don\u2019t do it in the first place, then, and don\u2019t make a mockery of the whole system,\u201d said Shavanah Taj, who has two children at Roath Park Primary.<br \/>\nLabour councillor Sue Lent also spoke out against the consultation.<br \/>\n\u201cIf you\u2019re not going to implement option B, then why consult on it? Photo: The Corner<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cWe have to consider how representative these responses are for a city-wide policy,\u201d she said, noting that 81% of responses were from four postcodes and 98% were from just two schools.<br \/>\nLib Dem councillor Joe Boyle criticised the decision to go against the consultation results.<br \/>\n\u201cIf you have a consultation where you put forward two options, one has to assume you are prepared to implement two options. Otherwise why is it on the table? Why are people being asked to make an assessment on it?\u201d he said.<br \/>\nIn answer to concerns that the results weren\u2019t representative, he argued: \u201cCouncillors should have gone out and let their residents know it was happening. It\u2019s unfair to blame those communities who do respond.\u201d<br \/>\nDespite the clashes, Cabinet voted to approve minimal changes to the current system.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have come to the decision that we should support this proposal because we genuinely believe it will have the best impact on the greatest number of pupils\u201d said Labour councillor Russell Goodway, Cabinet Member for Investment and Development.<br \/>\nCouncil leader Huw Thomas said: \u201cWe do live in a democracy where people are elected to take decisions to the best of their abilities.
