{"id":28177,"date":"2018-03-23T12:52:14","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T12:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=28177"},"modified":"2018-03-23T12:52:14","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T12:52:14","slug":"think-cardiffs-music-scene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/23\/think-cardiffs-music-scene\/","title":{"rendered":"What do you think about Cardiff&#039;s music scene?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MUSICIANS and music-lovers are giving their opinions on music in Cardiff and how they would like to see the scene improve. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surveygizmo.com\/s3\/4256085\/Cardiff-Music-City-Strategy\">survey<\/a> was launched yesterday by the council and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sounddiplomacy.com\/cardiff\/\">Sound Diplomacy<\/a>, a music industry consultancy company, who will use the results to help develop and protect a healthy music scene in Cardiff. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Musicians, DJs, venue owners, and people who work in the industry, as well as anybody who lives in Cardiff are being asked to give their views. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The survey asks about things like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gig opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The city\u2019s reputation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How expensive rehearsal spaces are<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Favourite music venues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Music education and industry education<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What grants are available <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are also questions about improving bylaws and regulations, for example allowing venues to stay open later, and protecting them from gentrification and complaints from property developers. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe need as many of Cardiff music lovers as possible to take part in this survey. It\u2019s a real opportunity to make their voices heard and play a big part in developing the music scene,\u201d said Peter Bradbury, cabinet member for culture and leisure. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sound Diplomacy said: \u201cThe aim is to develop policies that treat music as infrastructure and deliver a healthy music ecosystem.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The survey ends April 25. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The council <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/20\/cardiff-makes-plans-become-uks-first-music-city\/\">aims<\/a> to get Cardiff on par with Berlin and Barcelona, two cities where Sound Diplomacy has also worked, and that are renowned for the quality of their music. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Berlin has a wide range and long history of music: David Bowie and Iggy Pop lived there in the 1970s, house and techno reunited the East and West after the fall of the wall, and the city has been a centre for classical music for centuries. Due to looser regulations, bars and clubs often stay open from Friday night straight through to Monday morning. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Barcelona also has a great reputation for music. Its president in-exile Carles Puigdemont used to play in a Beatles cover band and the city is home to two of the world\u2019s best music festivals: S\u00f3nar and Primavera Sound. However recently the city has been struggling with its rising tourist numbers leading to a backlash from locals \u2014 anarchists attacked a sightseeing bus with British tourists on board two years ago, and there have been ongoing peaceful protests too. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff-airport.com\/\">Cardiff airport<\/a> flies direct to Berlin and Barcelona. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MUSICIANS and music-lovers are giving their opinions on music in Cardiff and how they would like to see the scene improve.
