Coun Jones-Pritchard urged Cardiff Council to use its spending influence and power of 15,000 staff to implement change. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe actually buy, we sell, we influence. We are far more powerful than the Assembly is in that respect. Can we get out there are start using that power, that influence and start making the change?\u201d he said in the chamber.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The motion commits the council to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working with partners such as the No Straw Stand<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working with Dwr Cymru Welsh Water on refill stations in council hubs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exploring markets for recycling previously thought to be not recyclable, such as card tyres, UPVC double glazing, and polystyrene<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Producing a report outlining plans by October 2018 to reduce single use items on council premises such as cups, wrapping, bags etc <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discussing with partners and stakeholders on the reduction of single use items<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In an example of close collaboration between the Tories and the Labour group, the motion sailed through with 55 votes to four. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coun Michael, cabinet member for clean streets, recycling and environment, had amended the original motion to ensure that it was deliverable. He commended the Conservative group for tabling the motion and working with him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coun Jones-Pritchard said: \u201cPlastic-free doesn\u2019t mean no plastics &#8211; we\u2019re talking about single-use plastic &#8211; the plastic stirrer, the use of the plastic straw, the cup, the plastic bottle, all of which can be seen littering our fields.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe can start now. We can talk to like minded individuals in the Assembly, the Welsh Government and local authorities. We can seek to persuade business partners and stakeholders of the need to remove single-use plastics. We have the power, we have the influence and I believe we have the commitment.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is going to happen. The question is do we do it now and lead it, or leave it to others, be overtaken and follow? Let&#8217;s get on with it and show we are a leading capital city.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Liberal Democrats had tabled a second amendment calling the council to be more ambitious, but were voted down in the chamber.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Fighting plastic in Rhiwbina<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Plastic free Rhiwbina\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9P13UloxwvQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Plastic free Rhiwbina\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9P13UloxwvQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rhiwbina resident Naomi England is leading a campaign to make Rhiwbina the first single-use plastic free community in Cardiff. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naomi, 41, was inspired to do something after watching Blue Planet on the BBC. As a mother of two she is very much aware of the need to do something for the future generation. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today she said: \u201cWatching Blue Planet, I was saddened, really really saddened, and I thought it\u2019s not enough just to do nothing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yesterday she joined forces with Anna McMorrin, MP for Cardiff North, and visited businesses in Rhiwbina to encourage them to sign up to the \u201cRhiwbina Against Plastic\u201d campaign. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re just doing little things at the moment, getting out and speaking to people, and raising awareness. I\u2019ve set up a Facebook page and I want a local artist to design a logo for the campaign.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many businesses in the village have already made changes to reduce the amount of plastic they use. This will help tell customers that they are committed to reducing plastic usage and help spread the message. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Naomi is pleased with the response so far, and said: \u201cIt\u2019s great to see a lot of people are already doing things. Lots of things are starting to happen.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWouldn\u2019t it be good if eventually the whole of Cardiff could be plastic free?
