{"id":28357,"date":"2018-03-23T18:27:02","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T18:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=28357"},"modified":"2018-03-23T18:27:02","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T18:27:02","slug":"rush-re-home-ely-animals-put","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/23\/rush-re-home-ely-animals-put\/","title":{"rendered":"Rush to re-home Ely animals before they have to be put down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">THE owner of Ely pet shop has a few days to find new homes for all her animals, including 12 meerkats, to stop them being put down. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nicki Clarke, 54, has owned JFM Exotics, on Cowbridge Road West, for four and a half years but it is closing next week. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She was adamant the two packs of meerkats should not be separated and has found places with days to spare. \u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One pack will be moving to the Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary near Neath and Mrs Clarke is thrilled they will be so close.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey\u2019ll have a beautiful outdoor and heated indoor enclosure, and they\u2019ve promised that I can go and visit them whenever I want and still go in with them. They\u2019re my babies and I hand reared some of them,\u201d she said.<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28365\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28365\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28365 \" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/IMG_5855-e1521826613214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"454\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28365\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28365 \" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/IMG_5855-e1521826613214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"454\" \/><\/noscript> Mrs Clarke and a few of her meerkats<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The other pack, with any luck, will be moving to Malta, where they will be able to spend more time outside, as the warmer climate suits them. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI know every single one of them. I\u2019m just heartbroken. But I still have two meerkats at home, Oscar and Crempog. They were kicked out of the pack because they\u2019ve got disabilities,\u201d she said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey\u2019re so excited, they\u2019ve already been down to have a look at their new home.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shop stocks a wide range of reptiles as well as being home to the 12 meerkats: Mia, Bubble, Squeak, GusGus, Timon, the aptly named one-eared van Gogh, Mini, Freddy, Buddy, Winston, Churchill and Taz.<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28358\" style=\"width: 574px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-28358\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/29251220_10213454735501786_160836717_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"430\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-28358\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/29251220_10213454735501786_160836717_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"430\" \/><\/noscript> A few of the meerkats set to go to their new homes<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New homes have been found for most of the reptiles but one snappy common water monitor named Daenerys is still looking.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She is a metre long and needs an enclosure with access to water. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clyde, a large Burmese Albino Python, is set to move in with one of her college student volunteers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mrs Clarke, whose home is quite the menagerie, will also take Rusty the chameleon. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hugo the chameleon and King the royal python, to name two, are off to their new homes in the next few days.<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I8HKGfa9khA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I8HKGfa9khA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The closure of the shop is a blow for not only the Clarke family but also their regular clients, and their volunteers, some of whom have special needs.<\/span><br \/>\nThe property has changed hands and the new landlord plans to pull down the shop and develop the land.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mrs Clarke said: &#8220;We were finding it increasingly difficult because of the state of the building anyway.
