{"id":28695,"date":"2018-03-29T18:06:01","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T17:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=28695"},"modified":"2018-03-29T18:06:01","modified_gmt":"2018-03-29T17:06:01","slug":"one-year-brexit-theresa-may-meets-welsh-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/03\/29\/one-year-brexit-theresa-may-meets-welsh-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"One year to Brexit &#8211; Theresa May meets Welsh businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EXACTLY a year before the UK leaves the European Union on 29th March 2019, Theresa May has been meeting Welsh business leaders at Aston Martin in St Athan. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Prime Minister made a whistle stop tour to the four nations of the UK to hear from people what Brexit means to them. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attendees at the roundtable meeting included Go Compare CEO Matthew Crummack, Andy Palmer &#8211; CEO of Aston Martin and John Newton Jones, managing director of Snowdonia Cheese Company. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In her Q&amp;A with business leaders, Mrs May said: \u201cWe want Wales and the wider UK to be the best place in the world to do business<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBusinesses are growing in confidence in overseas markets &#8211; \u00a0exports from Wales rose by 12.3% to \u00a316.4bn in the latest year on year figures.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWales will further benefit from our \u00a3600m investment in City Deals for Cardiff and Swansea as well as the abolishing of the Severn Crossing Tolls.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whilst discussing the issue of devolution, the Prime Minister said: \u201cWe are clear that anything the devolved administrations can do now, they will still be able to do after Brexit.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This comes after the Law Derived from the EU (Wales) Bill was agreed last week in the Senedd. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This Bill gives Welsh Government the powers to amend EU laws in devolved areas in the event that no agreement is reached with the UK Government on the powers held in the UK (Withdrawal) Bill.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Meanwhile in Cardiff, small business owners have mixed opinions about Brexit. <\/strong><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28697\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28697\" style=\"width: 755px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-28697\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/File_002.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"755\" height=\"566\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28697\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/File_002.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"755\" height=\"566\" \/><\/noscript> David Thomas, 79, has been running the Jon Ian shoe shop for 47 years<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Owner of Jon Ian shoe shop in Royal Arcade David Thomas, 79, has noticed people are spending more cautiously but seemed optimistic that the business would be able to weather the storm. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI opened my shop 47 years ago and during that time there have been five recessions and we\u2019ve managed fine. Business will always go on and will adapt to the times.\u201d he said. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Thomas said he supported the decision to leave to the EU because: \u201cI see the changes as necessary and we must look at things from a business point of view and less politically.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28699\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28699\" style=\"width: 756px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-28699\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/File_004.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"756\" height=\"567\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28699\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-28699\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/03\/File_004.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"756\" height=\"567\" \/><\/noscript> Diba, a clothes shop in Morgan Arcade is set to close down in the next few weeks<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maryam Mosaedian, tailor and owner of the clothes shop, Diba, in Morgan Arcade thinks leaving the EU is an awful decision.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ms Mosaedian has been running the shop for three years, but will be closing down in the next few weeks due to financial difficulties. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She has seen a huge in increase in the price of the silk she buys from the EU, saying the price per metre has gone up from \u00a322 per metre to \u00a331. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople don\u2019t shop in here anymore, they&#8217;re afraid of spending more. We don\u2019t have so many customers from European countries.
