dawned on me that there were quite a few more names popping up that we hadn\u2019t got on the war memorial that lived in\u00a0Grangetown\u00a0and\u00a0were connected with\u00a0Grangetown\u00a0\u2013 fascinating to find that they\u2019re not just names, they\u2019re not just regiments, they\u2019re not just ships \u2013 they&#8217;re actually real people with where they come from and what their Street<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nResidents soon came forward to\u00a0identify relatives\u00a0who had lost their lives in battle but weren\u2019t\u00a0recognised\u00a0on the memorial.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cThe war memorial is an imperfect document of what happened,\u201d Mr Duffy continued.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve got the benefit of the internet, search engines, military records online \u2013 they didn\u2019t have access to any of those things. You can understand why it wasn\u2019t perfect, but they were still a bit\u00a0disorganised.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cThe important thing now is we have been able to refresh what has been done back then \u2013 it shows the loss of lives was even greater than people\u00a0realised.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nA plaque has since been installed on the memorial to recognise those who weren&#8217;t listed.\u00a0It was also discovered that three Grangetown women had died because of the war, as well as one Cardiff City footballer.<br \/>\nThe book is one of\u00a0several\u00a0initiatives to commemorate the fallen of the area. Last month\u00a0postcards were sent out to mark the house of each\u00a0Grangetown\u00a0soldier and sailor who lost their lives at war.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cI think it has really touched people,\u201d Mr Duffy\u00a0said, \u201cWe\u2019ve had a really fantastic response.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cI think it\u2019s good for the community to know that they were just ordinary folk that did their bit, really.
