{"id":2923,"date":"2014-03-18T09:46:59","date_gmt":"2014-03-18T09:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=2923"},"modified":"2014-03-18T09:46:59","modified_gmt":"2014-03-18T09:46:59","slug":"wildlife-activists-respond-to-cardiff-bay-wakeboarding-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2014\/03\/18\/wildlife-activists-respond-to-cardiff-bay-wakeboarding-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff wakeboarding plan could get the green light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plans to bring the water sport wakeboarding to Cardiff Bay could get the go ahead next month despite objections by local residents.<br \/>\nCardiff Bay Wakeboarding is proposing to install a motorised cable tow to pull wakeboarders around the course at \u00a032kph seven days a week from 9am until 8pm.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2928\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wakeboarding.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2928  \" style=\"margin: 10px\" alt=\"Gareth Stevenson\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wakeboarding.jpg\" width=\"247\" height=\"405\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2928  \" style=\"margin: 10px\" alt=\"Gareth Stevenson\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/wakeboarding.jpg\" width=\"247\" height=\"405\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Gareth Stevenson of Cardiff Bay Wakeboarding said there will be no significant noise or threat to wildlife or birds<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nBut some local residents are concerned about noise and the threat to wildlife and birds, and Cardiff Council has received 41 objections.\u00a0 Gareth Stevenson, 42, who runs Cardiff Bay Wakeboarding says there will not be significant noise and there\u2019s no proof of any danger to wildlife or birds.<br \/>\n\u201cI really want to bring wakeboarding to Cardiff,\u201d said Mr Stevenson from Rhiwbina. \u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic outdoor sport for all ages, it\u2019s healthy and it would be the only site in South Wales.\u201d<br \/>\nResident Alun Metcalf, who lives in Atlantic Wharf, \u00a0said residents are opposing the long opening times during the winter months, the damage to wildlife and the ugly pylon infrastructure.<br \/>\nHe said: \u201cAtlantic Wharf is a mature residential area totally unsuited to this sort of development and if it is built the residents, the businesses and the wildlife will all suffer.\u201d<br \/>\nCardiff City Council\u2019s Environmental Health department raised concerns about noise and a survey carried out on a quiet Sunday in winter found noise levels would be \u201csignificantly below\u201d existing background noise.<br \/>\nPaul Seligman of Glamorgan Bird Club said Cardiff Council must be made aware of the species of birds in the Bay.<br \/>\nHe said: \u201cThe council has paid insufficient attention to the effects on nesting birds such as the Mute Swan and Great Crested Grebe.\u201d<br \/>\nGareth Stevenson claims there\u2019s no proof of any impact on wildlife.<br \/>\nThe application will be considered at a planning meeting at Cardiff Council on April 9.
