world\u2019s bloodiest conflicts.<br \/>\nMore than 2,200 of Cardiff\u2019s young men lost their lives in the war.<br \/>\nA field of remembrance has been erected in Cardiff Castle, populated by long rows of commemorative crosses and personal messages of reflection from the public.<br \/>\nAt the National Assembly for Wales, there will be talks, exhibitions and discussions this week that explore the vital role of women in the Great War and its aftermath.<br \/>\nGrangetown Local History Society are marking the centenary with the publication of a book \u2018It Touched Every Street\u2019 which uncovers the <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/11\/06\/book-uncovers-150-names-missing-from-grangetown-war-memorial\/\">stories of the suburb\u2019s 480 fallen<\/a> service men and women.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/11\/06\/remembrance-weekend-at-temple-of-peace\/\">The Temple of Peace<\/a>, on King Edward VII Ave, is running similar services that are trying to understand the people behind the names in their Book of Remembrance this weekend (November 9 to 11).<br \/>\nReflecting the war\u2019s widespread impact of these acts are not just tied to Wales\u2019 capital city but also events and installations across the country that see local communities and individuals marking their remembrance in unique ways.<br \/>\nA retired banker in Butetown has trawled the Glamorgan archives to discover t<a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/11\/06\/cardiff-sailors-remembered-in-ww1-project\/\">he contribution that the merchant navy, particularly African and Caribbean sailors,<\/a> made to Britain\u2019s war effort<br \/>\nBarry, which was a hub for both the merchant and military navies in the war, has had more than 100 wreaths laid at its cenotaph by children from across the Vale of Glamorgan in an event organised by local MP Alun Cairns &#8211;\u00a0 raising \u00a32,940 for the Royal British Legion.<br \/>\n<figure
