The Office for National Statistics has released\u00a0an experimental\u00a0data map showing how leafy the streets of Cardiff and Newport are.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe Data Science Campus is conducting the research using Google Street view.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nEvery pixel is assigned a category, which can then be given a\u00a0greenery\u00a0percentage value.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nOnly Cardiff and Newport have been analysed so far but there are plans to use the research across the nation to better understand the environment we live in.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;Greenery is really important, especially in the urban environment where it encourages outdoor activities and contributes to people&#8217;s well-being,&#8221; said Pontcanna resident, Claire Treweeks.<br \/>\nOn average Cardiff has 13% greenery visible from the road while Newport has 12%.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nCardiff has a very low amount of &#8220;green&#8221; council\u00a0parishes with\u00a0only four\u00a0parishes qualifying as &#8220;relatively green&#8221;.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nJust\u00a044 out of\u00a0all\u00a0the streets in Cardiff qualified as having 50% or more visible vegetation.<br \/>\nOld St Mellons is Cardiff\u2019s greenest area with 35% of greenery visible from the\u00a0roads\u00a0and\u00a0is closely followed by Lisvane.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nPontprennau\u00a0is also in the top three green parishes in Cardiff\u00a0and it is home to the greenest street in Cardiff, Ty-Draw Road.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30119\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30119 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps-293x220.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30119 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps-293x220.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2018\/11\/rd-ps.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/noscript> Cardiff&#8217;s least green street, Scott Road<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe\u00a0lowest\u00a0result in Cardiff came from Riverside where only one out of 73 roads qualified as &#8220;relatively green&#8221; and most roads have less than 1% vegetation.<br \/>\nOther built-up areas such as\u00a0Cathays,\u00a0Splott,\u00a0Adamsdown\u00a0and\u00a0Roath\u00a0closely follow Riverside\u00a0as the\u00a0least green parishes in Cardiff,\u00a0all of which have 10% or less visible shrubbery.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nOne\u00a0Splott\u00a0resident, Alex Mumford said: \u201cI\u2019m not really surprised, there\u2019s basically no bushes or plants around, maybe a few trees on the main road but that\u2019s it.\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe least green street in the city is Scott Road, which has no vegetation at all.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nOn average the results have shown that the further north you travel the more\u00a0visible greenery you will find on Cardiff\u2019s streets.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>You can find out how green your street is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/environmentalaccounts\/articles\/howgreenisyourstreet\/2018-11-19\">here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW green is your street?
