I knew lots of businesses and business people were really into cycling and they would probably be able to raise a lot of money.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nZoe didn\u2019t want to put on anything outdoors, like a sportive, because it would need too many people to help run it.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cOne day, my partner Steve, said to me: why don\u2019t you try something at the velodrome?\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAt first, Zoe was unsure what she could do there that would be different.\u00a0She wanted to create something out of the ordinary that ordinary people could do.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAnd then, one day, while sitting at home on her couch, she had an idea;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclone24.co.uk\/\">Cyclone 24<\/a>.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe rules of Cyclone 24 are simple: Teams of six ride around a track for 24 hours. Only one rider from each team is allowed on the track at a time, and they can ride for up to one hour in one go. The winning team is the team that manages the most laps &#8211; but that\u2019s not important.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nFor a lot of companies that enter, it is a team building exercise.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAt one event, Zoe calculated the combined distance cycled by all the teams in the challenge was roughly the same as the distance from Cardiff to Sydney.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cSo, the first venue I approached was the Newport velodrome and for some reason they went along with my craziness.\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nFor the first two years, Zoe ran Cyclone 24 purely as a hobby to make a bit of money for charity \u2013 well, more than a bit; since it started in 2015 it has raised over \u00a3150,000.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nDuring those early years, something strange happened to Zoe; she became a cyclist.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cI found that as I went around to companies, trying to get them to sign up, every single one of them would turn to me and say: \u2018so have you done it?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;Eventually, I thought oh god I better do it &#8211; and now I\u2019ve completed five.\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAs with any good old-fashioned addiction, Zoe\u2019s passion for cycling quickly became all consuming.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;I now have four bikes, I spend every Tuesday at the velodrome and pretty much the rest of my life on my road bike.\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nTwo years ago, Zoe decided to take the challenge in a new direction.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nShe left her job at the homelessness charity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thewallich.com\/\">Wallich<\/a>\u00a0and set about turning Cyclone 24 into a business.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nShe now runs three 24-hour events over the year at velodromes in Newport, Derby, and Manchester \u2013 Glasgow has been added for 2019.<br \/>\n\u201cGary\u00a0Tilletts, who is the head coach at Newport, was pivotal in moving things forward for us. He has worked with us since the start and helps us out at other venues.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nWhen Zoe says \u2018us\u2019 what she really means is \u2018me\u2019.<br \/>\nCyclone 24 is a one-woman business.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cIt is just me, but I do get a lot of help. Cyclone helps people get on to the track and once you&#8217;re used to it, you\u2019re hooked.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nCycling is often seen as a private members club; either you know or you don\u2019t.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nIt is also a male dominated sport, at all levels.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nAt lower levels it can be a bit of a boys only club and at professional level it is arguably one of the most unequal sports in the world.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe most famous three-week men&#8217;s race, The Tour de France, does now have a female equivalent, La Course.\u00a0In 2018 it lasted for one whole day.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nZoe has a considered opinion on the subject of women\u2019s cycling.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cI would love to see more women take on my challenge.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m all for getting more women cycling and I back initiatives being put forward like British Cycling\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcycling.org.uk\/news\/article\/20190128-womens-cycling-GB-cyclists-front--OneInAMillion-campaign-to-boost-women-s-cycling-by-1-million-by-2020-0\">One in a Million<\/a>\u00a0campaign but I don\u2019t necessarily like segregated events at this level.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe point Zoe makes is that separating sexes at this level feeds into the inequality at the top of the sport.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cIf I asked 10 women, I know eight of them would say they would only go to a women&#8217;s only track day. That\u2019s bad that they feel like that.
