Over many years Cardiff council have taken money out of important services.<br \/>\n\u201cPensioners used to love going to Fairwater Day Centre, but the council cut it so severely that less people became entitled to its services. They even started rationing Welsh cakes, because they said they couldn\u2019t afford enough for everyone who goes there.\u201d<br \/>\nDay centres help to combat loneliness, as they provide an opportunity for those with care needs to socialise.<br \/>\nWhile Cardiff Council says the latest investment will enable day centres to provide better quality services, Coun McEvoy argues that the damage has already been done.<br \/>\n\u201cI know many people who were very upset because the day centre could not help them. The reality is that social care is not a priority for Labour.\u201d<br \/>\nCoun McEvoy\u2019s comments refer to Cardiff Council\u2019s 2015 proposal to close four day centres, including the three featured in this report, to\u00a0save \u00a3800,000.<br \/>\nHowever, the closures did not happen following strong local opposition.<br \/>\nMichael Phillips, communications manager at Age Cymru, said: \u201cAny measures that improve older people\u2019s access to social activities such as this investment in the day centre are to be welcomed.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Phillips also said that much more needs to be done to improve services for older people in Cardiff.<br \/>\n\u201cWhile this facility is a welcome addition to the city\u2019s facilities, the local authority must also ensure that local older people are able to get to the centre, feel comfortable accessing the building and that meaningful and relevant activities are available for the visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BETTER quality services for older people with social needs are promised as work on Fairwater Day Centre begins.
