{"id":32374,"date":"2019-02-12T16:34:07","date_gmt":"2019-02-12T16:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=32374"},"modified":"2019-02-12T16:34:07","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T16:34:07","slug":"residents-come-together-to-fund-park-refurbishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/12\/residents-come-together-to-fund-park-refurbishment\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents come together to fund park refurbishment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A RADYR resident has started a social media campaign to subsidise the refurbishment of a village park.<br \/>\nCardiff Council have collaborated with Radyr Community Council and Clos Parc Radyr Management Committee to set aside \u00a325,000 for the revamp.<br \/>\nWhile this will be used to fund the majority of the new park equipment, local Resident Jamie Grundy hopes the social media campaign will help to provide extra items for the park.<br \/>\nJamie, who works in criminal justice and is a father to a 5-year-old, has set up a Twitter page to gather support and gauge what residents want from the park.<br \/>\n\u201cSocial media is a really useful tool, we\u2019ve used it as a form of consultation for the redevelopment. I set up the Twitter a while ago but we are looking to start a crowdfunding page soon,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe page will cover the balance of what is left but this needs to be reflective of what people want.<br \/>\n\u201cWe want residents to be as involved as possible, to say what they would like to see from the park. At the end of the day, the crowdfunding only works if what we propose serves the residents.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32378\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32378\" style=\"width: redevelopment and crowdfunding proposal.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nWhile no official target has been set for the page yet, Jamie says that it will likely be around \u00a35,000.<br \/>\nDespite there being considerable funding available, Councillor Roderick McKerlich says: \u201cThe redevelopment of the park is compounded by the fact that the site has drainage issues.\u201d<br \/>\nDue to the park being on a hill, it has been plagued by flooding and drainage problems in previous years.<br \/>\nWhile \u2018Redrow Homes\u2019 who have built a number of houses in the area have committed to finding and solving these issues, work will not begin on the redevelopment until these have been carried out.<br \/>\nSpeaking of funding for the park, Coun McKerlich continued: \u201cThe capital cost of putting these parks in is done by the council but when these need adequate refurbishment they simply cannot keep up.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s great that a member of the community has started a crowdfunded campaign to supplement the \u00a325,000 that has already been set aside, it\u2019s bringing everyone together.<br \/>\n\u201cThe fact of the matter is, as Cardiff Council are under pressure, it is becoming increasingly necessary for communities to do campaigns like this.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32381\" style=\"width: site<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nNevertheless, some residents have raised concerns about the accessibility of the plans put forward for redevelopment.<br \/>\nRadha Nair-Roberts, a 42 year-old mother of two who has MS thinks more can be done to make the park more accessible.<br \/>\n\u201cChildren should all have access to exercise \u2013 this is universal, whether there are able or disabled,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nRadha, who uses a wheelchair, believes that more inclusive equipment could have been chosen.<br \/>\n\u201cThe council have included one piece of equipment which they deem to be inclusive but I really don\u2019t think it is. From doing research I think there\u2019s much better facilities available.<br \/>\n\u201cThe developers are more concerned about building houses not communities.
