{"id":32845,"date":"2019-02-19T13:21:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T13:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=32845"},"modified":"2019-02-19T13:21:52","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T13:21:52","slug":"figures-show-cardiff-blighted-by-parking-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/19\/figures-show-cardiff-blighted-by-parking-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Figures show Cardiff blighted by parking problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_32852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32852\" style=\"width: 4160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32852 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/IMG_20181026_151214-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4160\" height=\"3120\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32852 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/IMG_20181026_151214-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4160\" height=\"3120\" \/><\/noscript> There were only three parking tickets issued down Clifton Street last month, but parking is becoming a real issue for Adamsdown.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nDATA released by Cardiff Council for January highlights a city-wide issue with parking, particularly in the ward of Adamsdown.<br \/>\nA total of 5,631 parking tickets were issued over the course of January &#8212; a worrying read for the community.<br \/>\nOf those 5,631 parking tickets issued in Cardiff last month 236 were issued in Adamsdown, more than Whitchurch, Gabalfa and Llandaff North.<br \/>\nParking has been an issue in the ward for a while, because it is so close to the city centre.<br \/>\nWith several developments underway, residents have been openly critical of seeing their community dominated by student flats and housing projects \u2013 some of which are <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/08\/site-of-ex-bingo-hall-dubbed-an-eyesore-amid-lack-of-work-and-fly-tipping\/\">untouched years after their approval.<\/a><br \/>\nThe latest proposal at the old Great Eastern Hotel site for 23 &#8220;affordable&#8221; flats had a petition signed by 82 people objecting its development on Metal Street.<br \/>\nThe developer was highly criticised after outlining plans for 24 cycle parking spaces but no parking for vehicles.<br \/>\nIn the plans, Hale and Hafod Housing Association said: \u201cGiven the sustainable location of the site, car dependency will be minimal, and the development will not generate any significant vehicle movements.<br \/>\n\u201cSPG (Supplementary Planning Guidance) recognises that there are lower levels of car ownership associated with affordable housing \u2013 in this context, and in light of the site\u2019s highly accessible location, no car parking spaces are provided on site.\u201d<br \/>\nThey cited Metal Street as a \u2018highly accessible and sustainable location\u2019 with the option of buses and the distance to Queen Street Railway Station as other reasons for excluding parking spaces in the plans.<br \/>\nHowever, Adamsdown is grappling with a parking problem even before anyone has moved into new developments.<br \/>\nSoraya Hallsan, 25, of Longcross Street; which traffic wardens issued 20 parking tickets down last month, said: \u201cWith building work going on it\u2019s a nightmare. I\u2019ve had a baby screaming in the back of the car and I can\u2019t stop [to park up].<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I\u2019ve been shopping, I\u2019ve had to have someone watch the baby while I drop the shopping in the house.<br \/>\n\u201cI walk everywhere now just because it saves the stress of parking.\u201d<br \/>\nAnother resident of Longcross Street, Adam, said: \u201cI don\u2019t own a car myself but when my Dad comes to visit it is very difficult. For him to get a permit and park up as I don\u2019t drive is not easy.\u201d<br \/>\nResidents pay up to \u00a330 per year for a parking permit and pay an additional fee of \u00a37.50 or \u00a330 for visitors depending if they already have a permit of their own.<br \/>\nA spokesperson for Cardiff Council said: \u201cThe income [from tickets] funds the operational cost of parking and enforcement and any surplus or deficit is transferred to a parking reserve account.
