To my right was a computer screen which seemed to be playing a video on loop.<br \/>\nAfter spending a little while digesting the art, I spoke to \u2018Artist Curator\u2019 Phil Nicol.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33311 size-blog-gallery-second\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52800434_610072842772947_2159040773633343488_n-530x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"358\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33311 size-blog-gallery-second\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52800434_610072842772947_2159040773633343488_n-530x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"358\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\nWhile the artists shared no common ground other than being a part of Disability Arts Cymru (and coincidentally all being women), there were definite elements of cohesiveness amongst the work.<br \/>\n\u201cThere isn\u2019t a theme as such, but I think a lot of the work is autobiographical \u2013 it\u2019s about the body, touch, movement,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nSome of the artists use their work to reflect upon their disabilities, while others are investigating material itself. They are mirroring its physical capabilities against their own and using the materiality as a metaphor.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat we offered the artists was that they could each present and explore their own cohesive body of work, with no limitations so to speak.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t think some of them had necessarily been shown professionally before. The partnership has been a really good opportunity.\u201d<br \/>\nFor many, disability is too often treated as a defining feature. However, wandering through the gallery this was so clearly not the case.<br \/>\nSome of the work seemed to acknowledge the artists disability through the idea of \u2018selfhood\u2019, while simultaneously dismissing it.<br \/>\nVivi-Mari Carpelan is one of the artists whose work is displayed in the gallery.<br \/>\nAfter relocating to West-Wales in 2010, she was unable to pursue a career due to declining health. She now uses her artwork to visualise her struggles and explore the idea of \u2018self-exposure\u2019.<br \/>\n\u201cMy artistic work expressed paradox as a key to change, transition and transformation. As a marginalised person with a condition that is mostly invisible to others, it\u2019s especially important for me to help make the invisible visible,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33305 size-blog-gallery-first\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52377257_1181443718688284_9108456549012996096_n-530x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"726\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33305 size-blog-gallery-first\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52377257_1181443718688284_9108456549012996096_n-530x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"726\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\nThis theme of making \u2018the invisible visible\u2019 is littered throughout the exhibition.<br \/>\nThe space to the back of the gallery is dedicated to the work of Rachael Wellbeing.<br \/>\nTitled \u2018Landscape of the mind\u2019, the series consists of three large canvases constructed using paper pulp and acrylic paint. These represent the conscious thought drifting through the process of meditation.<br \/>\nShe says that her work is \u201cneither representative nor a state of being, it resides in the liminal space between meditation and the conscious.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33307 size-blog-gallery-second\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52605816_985625504980073_8877809619737509888_n-530x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"358\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33307 size-blog-gallery-second\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52605816_985625504980073_8877809619737509888_n-530x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"358\" \/><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33309 size-blog-gallery-second\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52850015_1929008563874602_4878396959158697984_n-530x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"358\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33309 size-blog-gallery-second\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52850015_1929008563874602_4878396959158697984_n-530x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"358\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\nMost of the work in the gallery focused on the relationship between identity and physicality.<br \/>\nA closer look at the figures that had struck me on entering the gallery seemed to confirm this.<br \/>\nCreated by Gemma Jayne Paine, the figures are part of a textile piece looking at old myths.<br \/>\nFocusing on themes such as identity, and cultural stereotyping, the work looks at topics such as \u2018pink for girls; blue for boys\u2019 and tributes to famous women.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33308 size-blog-gallery-first\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52712871_543658849459764_668411518164926464_n-530x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"726\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33308 size-blog-gallery-first\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/52712871_543658849459764_668411518164926464_n-530x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"726\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\nOther artists included in the exhibition are Lou Lockwood, Jo Shapland and Jan Williams.<br \/>\nSimilarly, these look at memory, adaption to disability, community and connections.<br \/>\nWandering through the gallery quickly made me realise both the naivety and ignorance I subconsciously held towards the support available in the creative industries.<br \/>\nI set out to speak to someone from Disability Arts Cymru to learn a bit more about the work they do and how the collaboration with the gallery came about.<br \/>\nSara Beer, the South Wales Regional Officer for Disability Arts Cymru, offered to speak to me.<br \/>\n\u201cWe work across all arts forms and are revenue funded by the Arts Council of Wales as the lead organisation for Disability and the Arts in Wales.<br \/>\n\u201cWe really believe in opening up access and opportunity, celebrating diversity, nurturing embryonic and established high-calibre disabled practitioners and inspiring change throughout Wales,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nThe partnership with BayArt came about after Sara enquired about the possibility of holding their annual exhibition there.<br \/>\n\u201cAn open exhibition didn\u2019t fit in with the galleries programme of work but Phil and Maggie were interested in curating an exhibition with work from a small number of our members,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re really pleased with how Phil has curated things; the gallery is a really nice space to be in and it has been such a great opportunity for our members.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>BayArt:\u00a0 A brief history<\/h3>\n<p>Despite only being a public gallery since 2002, the Grade II listed building on Bute Street has a rich art heritage.<br \/>\nThe Association of Artists and Designers in Wales took possession of 54b\/c Bute Street in 1980, using it primarily as a studio space. This group later went on to be known as \u2018Butetown Artists\u2019.<br \/>\nBy 1990, the building had severely deteriorated and was in a critical state, the group had a choice. Either leave and find a new space or try and find a solution. They chose the latter.<br \/>\nRe-establishing themselves as a \u2018company limited\u2019 by guarantee, ownership of the building was gifted to Butetown Artists by both Cardiff City Council the trustees of the Association of Artists and Designers in Wales.<br \/>\nAfter funding projects raised the \u00a31,000,000 needed for restoration, the building finally opened as a public gallery in 2002.<br \/>\nToday, it holds around four exhibitions a year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The \u2018Six Artists\u2019 exhibition runs until March 1<sup>st<\/sup> at BayArt gallery, between 12pm \u2013 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NESTLED amongst the Victorian architecture of one of Cardiff Bay\u2019s busiest streets, BayArt gallery stands out.
