{"id":33356,"date":"2019-02-22T17:41:22","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T17:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=33356"},"modified":"2019-02-22T17:41:22","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T17:41:22","slug":"whats-it-like-to-work-the-bar-when-wales-play-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/22\/whats-it-like-to-work-the-bar-when-wales-play-england\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#039;s it like to work the bar when Wales play England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CARDIFF\u2019S bars and restaurants are ready as thousands make their way to the capital for Wales\u2019 crunch Six Nations match with England.<br \/>\nBut what&#8217;s it like for the staff that work some of the busiest shifts of their lives to serve them? <em>The Cardiffian <\/em>has been given an insight into what they expect.<br \/>\nJordan McCarthy, who works in The Prince of Wales on St Mary Street, spoke about the challenges and physicality of preparing a venue that can hold over 2,000 people.<br \/>\nHe said: \u201cEvery table and chair is to be stored away, as well as any glass away from the bar.<br \/>\n\u201cWe also set up temporary bars for faster service, which involves bringing up various tables and kegs from our cellar.<br \/>\n\u201cThe biggest challenge for the day is in its setup, in ensuring that everything is perfectly prepared before our doors open.\u201d<br \/>\nWith both teams battling for the top spot, giving this fixture even more weight than usual, Jordan spoke about what he expects from the day.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m expecting a much larger and intense crowd than years previous,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re prepping for a record breaking day and I\u2019m anticipating just that.\u201d<br \/>\nJordan also spoke about how customers and the match itself are important to how the shift pans out.<br \/>\n\u201cThe emotions are much more heightened, in that a result can basically make or break your shift \u2013 also a lot of beer is thrown.<br \/>\n\u201cThe actual match day is an outstanding time to work at a pub. If I wasn\u2019t working I would love to be on the other side of the bar.<br \/>\n\u201cThe day will be hectic. You have to pre-game yourself.\u201d<br \/>\nShe said a lot of work is put into ensuring customers are served quickly and easily, with a reduced menu to take the strain off the kitchen staff.<br \/>\n\u201cFood service dies off quite quickly to be honest, as the nightclub opens early,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nWalkabout bring in temporary staff to help for the day.<br \/>\nMs Congdon said they mostly are a great help, however she said it can be difficult to help and train them in such short time.<br \/>\nShe added: \u201cEvent days like this are tough. It is regularly quite busy anyway.<br \/>\n\u201cBut tomorrow there will be too many people to take all bookings.\u201d<br \/>\nSpeaking about the atmosphere, he added: \u201cit\u2019s very nice, very enjoyable \u2013 especially if Wales win.\u201d<br \/>\nIt is not only the pubs and restaurants that thoroughly prepare for a match day.
