The housing market is constantly fluctuating due to it being such a sellers\u2019 market at the moment which is why Help-to-Buy has never really taken off.&#8221;<br \/>\nWith such take up, there is opposition to the scheme from mortgage lenders.<br \/>\nA source from a mortgage company who wished to remain anonymous said: \u201cYou have a \u00a3300,000 limit in Wales to opt into the scheme and it is this cap that stops many first-time buyers in Cardiff from owning houses.&#8221;<br \/>\nWith the average new-build house price in Wales at \u00a3210,429, according to the Office of National Statistics, the source believes more could be done to entice people into the Help-to-Buy scheme \u2013 as the graph below shows first-time buyers are more interested in buying houses at higher price ranges.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33625\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2.jpg 420w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2-293x422.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33625\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2.jpg 420w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/02\/help-to-buy-2-293x422.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\nThe source added: \u201cProperty developers are more interested in building new-build properties over the \u00a3300k mark that are not available to your first-time buyer.<br \/>\n\u201cJust over the border the scheme in England has sold a lot of houses, but if you are a first-time buyer looking for a house here in Wales I do not think the scheme is much help.<br \/>\n\u201cThe scheme is driving prices up with other developers which helps the property developers rather than the first-time buyers \u2013 we need to look at the bigger picture and have a re-think on the whole scheme.<br \/>\nHowever, Independent Councillor Neil McEvoy spoke about the need for social housing.<br \/>\nNeil McEvoy, who represents Fairwater, said:\u00a0\u201cAn enabling scheme needs to be made with a stipulation that houses should not be sold on just to be rented out and should be here for the local population.<br \/>\n\u201cWe need a local market where the proceeds from the sales go into more social housing and tackle the 1,300 empty houses we have in Cardiff.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u201cHelp-to-Buy needs to be extended to houses that are not just new builds \u2013 we need more schemes that can help achieve this.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE \u2018help-to-buy\u2019 scheme which was set up to boost the housing market in Wales has failed to make a big impact in Cardiff, figures reveal.
