Fraudsters have a history of targeting elderly people in the city<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to\u00a0<\/span>Age UK<\/span><\/a>, five million older people (65+) claim to have been targeted by scammers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\nThis can have a serious impact on their health, particularly for those defrauded in their own homes, who are 2.5 times more likely to either die or go into residential care within a year of the scam.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\nCardiff is Wales\u2019 largest city, home to 353,300 people, nearly a third of which are over the age of 50. According to\u00a0<\/span>Cardiff Council<\/span><\/a>, 24.3% of the population in\u00a0<\/span>Llanishen<\/span>\u00a0is over the age of 60.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\nKaren Steele from charity, Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale, urges people to be vigilant and use common sense in these situations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\nAccording to the charity, scams like this work because they look like the real thing and catch people off guard when they are least expecting it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNever send money to anyone”<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The charity is also becoming more concerned over scammers getting smarter, using new technology, new products or services to create believable stories that will convince people to give them money or personal details.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cIf you\u2019ve never heard of the person,\u00a0<\/span>organisation<\/span>\u00a0or promotion then it is likely it\u2019s because it\u2019s not real. If you didn\u2019t buy a ticket or enter a competition \u2013 you can\u2019t win!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cNever send money to anyone \u2013 no matter how much they convince you they are the real deal with persuasive sales patter.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\n\u201cNo legitimate sales company would pressure you to decide straight away. Tell someone you trust or contact Citizens Advice if you are being pressured as you do not need to face the scammers on your own,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Ms<\/span>\u00a0Steel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
