I came here in 1987 with the hurricane that flattened all the tress in Bute Park,\u201d he said, referring to the wild weather of October that year.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34596 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_-293x448.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34596 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_-196x300.jpg 196w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_-293x448.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/51HsR7C-rhL._SX324_BO1204203200_.jpg 326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><\/noscript>The first book in Jon\u2019s latest series, <em>Thimble Monkey Superstar<\/em>, is the only children\u2019s book with a disabled lead character to be shortlisted for a major literary award.<br \/>\nIn 2017, it was nominated for the Scholastic Lollies, awarded to the funniest UK children\u2019s books each year.<br \/>\nJon\u2019s 12-year-old son, Jordi, has cerebral palsy and he based the main character of the <em>Thimble Monkey <\/em>series on him.<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s a kind of genius, but obviously I\u2019m a parent so I\u2019m a bit biased on that,\u201d he said, telling me Jordi had written a 15,000 word novel of his own by the age of 11.<br \/>\nThe father and son team also bounce ideas off each another for Jon\u2019s next book.<br \/>\nJordi reads all of Jon\u2019s writing after school each day, and some of his ideas have made their way into his dad\u2019s work.<br \/>\nJon wants to normalise the use of diverse characters in literature: \u201cIt\u2019s not something that\u2019s about disability, it doesn\u2019t shy away from disability, but that\u2019s not the main subject of the story,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nToday, Jordi is compering the Cardiff City Community Foundation\u2019s 10<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary event at City Stadium.<br \/>\nThe foundation is the official charity of Cardiff City FC and works with children and young people in South Wales to improve their health and wellbeing. Jordi plays for a disabled football team and the foundation recognised his gift for language, asking him to speak at the event.<br \/>\nFor World Book Day yesterday, Jon was at Insole Court, Llandaff, as part of their first <em>Brilliant Books <\/em>event. He did a workshop and reading session for two schools.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve been visiting schools and speaking to children since I was first published,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n\u201cI lived in Adamsdown for 19 years and kids would come round to my house when they found out I was an author, to borrow books.&#8221;<br \/>\nFigures from the What Kids are Reading report, which looks at literacy levels in children, reveal that the reading age of children in year 5 in Wales is 6 months lower than students elsewhere in the UK.<br \/>\n\u201cLiteracy and poverty are totally interlinked. Social conditions are by far the biggest influence on how well people read,\u201d Jon said.<br \/>\nHe linked lower literacy levels in Wales to high levels of deprivation and a lack of diversity in literature.<br \/>\n\u201cPeople have to read things in books that are familiar to them, their language and their experiences.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s a big problem for people who don\u2019t see characters of their social class in books.\u201d<br \/>\nJon said that world book day was good for rising the profile of authors, but was concerned that the closure of book shops and budget cuts for libraries made life more difficult for local authors in Cardiff.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s definitely got harder as a writer. When I first came here there were about six book shops, now there\u2019s two,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThere being fewer book shops meant that the remaining ones have had to focus on big-name authors like Roald Dahl and J.K.
