Immediately after, she plays netball.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is not the diary of an uber-organised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and youthful<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0suburban woman. <\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pam is 77-years-old. <\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">More remarkably, she has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">battled through\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a brain tumour and currently suffers from blood cancer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou feel better after doing it,\u201d she says, humbly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strangely, this is not an isolated tale of inspiration within her \u2018Waking Netball\u2019 team, run by East Sport Cardiff.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe impact and the stories we hear all the time are just heart-wrenching,\u201d sa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">id<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0organiser Lorraine Rye, 52, who is also Neighbourhood Sports Co-ordinator for East Cardiff<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is &#8216;Walking Netball&#8217;?<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Every Wednesday morning, a group of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0lively<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ladies, ranging from 67-to-87-years-old<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">descend on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the local community\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">centre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The sessions begin with passing drills and ends in a game, where running is penalised.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of the women are physically\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disabled<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and one is partially\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sighted<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">doesn\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t stop them from coming.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey just want to be active, feel safe and make new friends,\u201d says Lorraine.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last week, it was one member\u2019s birthday<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and Sarah<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 who wished to remain anonymous\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was serenaded with \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019 both before and after the session.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe confidence it has given them is huge,\u201d said coach Gary Fish<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who runs the sessions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe amount of fitness exercise they are doing is almost unquantifiable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey\u2019re working a lot on their core mobility and it gives them confidence.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nWalking football and rugby has <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/01\/walking-rugby-sessions-to-start-at-new-3g-pitch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">been popularised<\/a>\u00a0throughout Wales, just exercise<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gary and Lorraine both agree that the sessions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re about more than exercise, believing g<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ateway<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to meaningful friendship<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are vital in combatting loneliness.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Age UK found that loneliness and social isolation has the same health implications as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, increasing the likelihood of mortality by 26%.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each session ends with a cup of tea and a slice of cake at the Innovate Caf\u00e9.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI like doing these things because it gets me out of the house and stops me feeling lonely,\u201d said Pam<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, from St\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mellons<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 59<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, from Newport, said the social side of sitting in the caf\u00e9 is crucial.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey have self-managed and developed their own community and it is lovely to see \u2013 it is heart-warming,\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe tend to forget that a lot of them are potentially on their own \u2013 so this bond is invaluable.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cProbably the biggest thing is the infectious laughter and fun they have.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s just seeing the joy on their faces. I get quite emotional as I\u2019m saying it, because they become friends.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf this session ever stopped, not only would myself and Lorraine be upset, I don\u2019t think the effect on the other people would be quantifiable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;It&#8217;s about caring&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another group member, Rosemary, aged 74, said she joined when she retired.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I finished work, I didn\u2019t want to sit at home and do noth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s also about the company of other people \u2013 we are all friends now.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The importance of such schemes are clear, with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">two-fifths of old people stating in an Age UK Survey that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0television is their main company<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We know sport can be a tool to help \u2013 if that can change one person\u2019s life, then it is worth every penny,\u201d said Lorraine.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a member misses a session, Lorraine will ring them to make sure they\u2019re okay.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s about caring,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are also teaching them to become a silver work-force of badminton instructors to be sent to coach in Primary Schools.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lorraine stresses that t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hese sessions are a collective effort.
