S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cathingly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, fans joked he wouldn\u2019t manage the teams during friendlies.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 year in charge of Wales has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">created<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more questions than answers, but puncturing the uncertainty is a crop of young and talented players who give hope to a nation dreaming their French journey wasn\u2019t a one-off.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">A Nations League in which Wales showed flashes of brilliance and immaturity in equal measure told us that the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir potential was hamstrung by naivety.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">On Sunday,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 men must translate this exciting potential into three points.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wales laboured in their friendly <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/03\/19\/the-trinidad-and-tobago-view-ahead-of-wales-friendly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">against Trinidad and Tobago<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on Wednesday<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was pleased with a last-gasp winner from Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;That&#8217;s a nice habit to have and that&#8217;s what I said to the players,&#8221; he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Once you have that trait it doesn&#8217;t leave you.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conspicuous by their absence, Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Ben Davies watched on from the terrace.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0faced a backlash from fans, given this was the first time North Wales had welcomed international football in a decade.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur results under\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have been mixed, and our first choice 11 haven\u2019t played together since the defeat to Denmark in the autumn,\u201d said Editor of fanzine International Wales, Darren for Wales?<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, Mr Jones, 52, doesn\u2019t feel it\u2019s a must-win.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A win would certainly give us an advantage, but from experience, there can be quite a few twists and turns in a qualifying group<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d he said<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If we failed to claim all three points on Sunday, it would put us under increased pressure with two away games to follow in June.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If things don\u2019t go as we\u2019d like, we could be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">six<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0points or more off the pace after the first three games.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a win on Sunday would certainly settle the nerves<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">In reality, Slovakia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are Wales\u2019 biggest obstacle to securing second spot \u2013 the top two teams\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the group\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will go through.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">World Cup finalists Croatia have more experience and, crucially in international football, know their game-plan.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wales<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were taught an important lesson when street-wise Denmark turned them over twice in the Nations League. The difference? The Danes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">under\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00c5ge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hareide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, had a clear philosophy and executed it at Wales\u2019 expense.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A clear identity<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mr Jones, from Porth, thinks\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 ideology should start to make itself plain this campaign.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He&#8217;s had 11 games to sort his team, and we have, what is arguably the most exciting squad of players for decades<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe have w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">orld class players in Bale and Ramsey, experienced players like Ashley Williams and Joe Allen and then a whole host of talented younger players bursting with flair<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is a defining time for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, explains Mr Jones.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTo the majority of fans, it would really be a failure if we don\u2019t finish in the top two,\u201d he said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPersonally, I really hope\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is successful because that would mean my country is successful.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cLose on Sunday and I think you\u2019ll start to hear some fans voicing their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disapproval<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe pressure will be on.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Win and Wales already have the upper-hand. In a group of just five \u2013 one of only two groups to not have six teams in European qualification\u00a0\u2013 small margins have significant impact.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Games like these are often settled by a sprinkle of stardust.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Expected line-up and selection dilemmas\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wayne Hennessey is likely to start between the sticks, despite the Crystal Palace man making just four appearances for his club since early December.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Captain Ashley Williams will be paired with Bournemouth\u2019s Chris\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mepham<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Welsh legend Chris Gunter \u2013 the most-capped player ever \u2013 will make way for Swansea City\u2019s exuberant Connor Roberts and Tottenham&#8217;s Ben Davies will play at left-back.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">With Chelsea\u2019s Ethan\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ampadu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0missing through injury,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Giggs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0will call on Manchester City\u2019s Matt Smith, currently on loan at FC Twente. The 19-year-old has been an ever-present for the Dutch club and his performance away against The Republic of Ireland in the Nations League belied his tender age.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Smith will slot alongside stalwart Joe Allen in at the base of a midfield triangle.
