data-contrast=\"auto\">Lynda Thorne, said:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWith the number of people in the city aged 65 to 84 projected to rise by 42% by 2037 and those over 85 set to almost double, it&#8217;s essential that we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recognise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the housing-related challenges an <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/03\/01\/elderly-couple-conned-out-of-cash-and-jewellery-in-rats-scam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increasing ageing population<\/a> brings and plan ahead to ensure we can meet their needs.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:330}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8220;There is a strong focus in the draft strategy on providing accommodation that supports independence, ensuring people are <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/05\/work-starts-to-improve-fairwater-centre-for-elderly\/\">connected to their community<\/a> to help prevent social isolation, and reducing the need for residential care.&#8221;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:330}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a result, Cardiff Council is consulting on its Older Persons Housing Strategy for 2019-2023 to reflect the increasing number of older people living in the city.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The final strategy is being discussed by the cabinet, but initial proposals include a commitment to building a minimum of 730 new homes, 434 of which will be council-owned, in Cardiff by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new homes will be \u201ccare ready\u201d, which involves providing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">domiciliary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0care for tenants as required.\u00a0<\/span><span Wales,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hel<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00e9na<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herklots<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, said: \u201cHousing plays a vital role in <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/03\/12\/the-walking-netball-scheme-fighting-loneliness-in-old-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">supporting older people&#8217;s health, well-being and independence<\/a>, and helps them to remain engaged with and part of their communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It is therefore vital that local authorities undertake effective long-term planning that carefully considers older people&#8217;s housing needs, and how these needs may change as people get older, to ensure the availability of housing options that older people want and need to see.&#8221;<\/span><span to existing homes, \u201cto ensure they are fit for purpose and support independent living\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span Accessible Housing Unit, which will act as an advice service for older people to help them understand the housing options that are available to them in the city.\u00a0<\/span><span its\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Indpendent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Living Service to support older people who wish to remain in their own homes and <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/11\/20\/scrapping-bus-could-leave-elderly-of-cyncoed-iosolated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tackle social isolation<\/a> among \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The money for the Older Persons Housing Strategy will come from Cardiff Council\u2019s social services budget, which is receiving an extra \u00a35million for 2019-20
