Basra to Barry: Meet the very busy Kath Fisher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SOME people do a lot.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are people you encounter every now and again, who just do more than the rest of us.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">They have the same number of hours in the day as everyone else and yet, somehow, they cram multiple lives into one lifetime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kath Fisher is one of those annoyingly productive people \u2013 over her career she has worked as an air traffic controller in the RAF, as a bodyguard for Maria Sharapova, as a police officer in Barry and she currently works in a helicopter for South Wales police.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oh, and she volunteers for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"RNLI rescues 2018\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bLqMYPah1Io?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" data-contrast=\"auto\">When we meet for a drink, I am tucked up nicely in a chair, surrounded by gentle, jazz music and the smell of roasting coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kath meanwhile has already been on a call-out that morning helping to rescue three drunk, Russian sailors who went on a big night in Barry and ended up adrift in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penarthtimes.co.uk\/news\/17517420.three-drunk-russian-sailors-rescued-from-flat-holm-island-by-penarth-rnli-after-they-got-lost-following-night-out-in-barry\/\">dinghy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">Kath&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dad served in the RAF and thought that she would be well suited to a life in the military from a young age \u2013 clearly, she was.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She got her pilot&#8217;s licence at 17 and was sponsored through university by the Royal Air Force.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her second year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at university<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Kath took a trip to America.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A friend and I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hired two\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">four-seater<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cessnas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">put<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0six of our mates in the back and flew up the east coast.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pre-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">9\/11,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">so we were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0able to do\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">orbits around the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tatue of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iberty and stuff like that.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was odd, I was only 20 so I wasn\u2019t old enough to buy a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">beer,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but I could land a plane at an airport.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure her\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fficer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raining and signed up as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">raffic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ontroller.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAfter my initial six-year period was up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the RAF<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">began to think it was time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to try something different.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI did a tour in Iraq in 2004 as an ATC and while I was there, I got chatting to the general\u2019s bodyguard and began finding out what it was like to be a bodyguard.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36162\" style=\"width: 481px\" military would pay for my re-training.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Diving in at the deep end, for a change, Kath found herself protecting one of the biggest tennis stars in the world at the time: Maria Sharapova.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI worked for her when she was at the height of her game<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hen she was in the UK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from 2007 to 2009<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although she never experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0any truly dangerous moments during the \u201cbodyguard years\u201d Kath said that she still doesn\u2019t like to have her back to a room.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s true. Even now, tucked away in the safety of Penarth, Kath has her back to the wall as she sips her latte and talks quietly but assuredly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI like to see where everyone is, I want to know where all the exits are.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEverything I have done in my life has forced me to always be thinking ahead, constantly thinking about what might go wrong and having back-ups.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps, this is why there have been so many jobs, so many abrupt changes in direction \u2013 it must be hard to stay in one place if your mind is always darting ahead.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">few<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0looking after wealthy Saudi royals and their families in London, Kath moved back to Penarth.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was looking for a normal job, one that allowed her to go home at the end of the day, something a little less stressful \u2013 so she became a police officer in Barry.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Looking up from my notes I can\u2019t resist the urge to ask what was more dangerous &#8211; the police on the other hand,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are often targets of abuse &#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0both from those they are trying to help and those they are trying to arrest.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was a shock to the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">system;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you don\u2019t really realise how some people have to live. I\u2019ve had this nice life in the military and you just don\u2019t realise what it\u2019s like<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kath persevered for five years as a police officer, building relationships in the community and doing her job, but before she knew it, she was at it again \u2013 thinking ahead; tinkering with the future.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was looking at surveillance jobs within the police, when a job as tactical flight officer on a police helicopter came up and she decided to go for it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s perfect, it suits me down to the ground, it&#8217;s everything I\u2019ve learned.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe way it works is we have one police officer in the front operating the camera and I\u2019m in the back, I can see what the officer in the front is seeing but I also have all the mapping technology.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI tell the pilot where to go while looking out the window and trying to co-ordinate where the officers on the ground are going.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36165\" issues officers face as a result of the distressing work they do.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kath says that the majority of their call-outs these days are to do with vulnerable missing people such as people with mental health problems, or dementia.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As social services face funding cuts, police are increasingly on the front line of mental health support.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We have finished our drinks and Kath is looking away, back to the wall.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDo you remember, about a year ago there was an incident in Cardigan\u00a0where\u00a0 a\u00a0mum had got out of her car and left her child inside while she went into her house.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When\u00a0she came\u00a0back outside the car was gone.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen we got there in the helicopter our first thought, because it was all over social media, was that someone had nicked the car with the keys in and was driving around with the toddler in the back.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As they flew around the town Kath noticed a white square in the river \u2013 the car had rolled down the hill it was parked on and gone into the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI immediately got on the radio to the guys on the ground and made sure they could not be overheard by anyone involved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI told them I was pretty sure I had seen the car. They got one officer in the water but he couldn\u2019t reach it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThen I just saw this figure launch, like Baywatch, into the water, swim to the car, smash the window and pull this little body out.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe person who leapt in was a female PCSO. Male police officers hadn\u2019t been able to get there and I don\u2019t know if she was a mum, but she was like &#8216;I am getting into that car whatever happens&#8217;.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kath is still talking quietly but she has leaned forward in her chair, back no longer against the wall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey worked on her for about three hours but she had been underwater for about 90 minutes so they weren\u2019t going to get her back.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36167\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-36167 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/54731245_2104011809694677_6416563020033425408_n-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36167 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2019\/03\/54731245_2104011809694677_6416563020033425408_n-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><\/noscript> Kath at work for the RNLI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Living the lives Kath has, you can\u2019t be ruled by emotion, you have to feel it but not be overwhelmed by completely overwhelming situations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAs we were flying away, leaving it behind, I started crying and my colleague asked me if I was OK and I just said &#8216;no&#8217;.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sometimes, that&#8217;s too difficult.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two years ago, Kath got involved with a charity that aims to help veterans from the armed forces and also members of the emergency services, who might be suffering with PTSD.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodyslodge.org\/\">Woody\u2019s<\/a> Lodge was set up in memory of Paul Woodland (a member of the Special Boat Service) who died in a training accident in Poole in 2012.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m a trustee on the board and basically it\u2019s a charity that helps veterans, military primarily but all sorts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 we help with anything<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0housing, finance or even just a cup of tea.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lady there that helps people with form-filling. It\u2019s only a little thing but when your head is not in the right place doing things like that can be very hard.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ask whether Kath wants to keep working at the National Police Air Service for the rest of her career. She says she could see herself doing that, but part of her wants to find something a little less intense in the future.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI might join the RAF reserves and get into property &#8230;\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some people do a lo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t \u2013 but Kath Fisher does it all.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SOME people do a lot.\u00a0 There are people you encounter every now and again, who just do more than the rest of us.
