{"id":3671,"date":"2014-03-21T16:03:26","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T16:03:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=3671"},"modified":"2014-03-21T16:03:26","modified_gmt":"2014-03-21T16:03:26","slug":"the-future-of-welsh-cricket-is-bright-says-glamorgan-director-hugh-morris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2014\/03\/21\/the-future-of-welsh-cricket-is-bright-says-glamorgan-director-hugh-morris\/","title":{"rendered":"The future of Welsh cricket is bright says Glamorgan director Hugh Morris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cricket may never beat rugby and football in the popularity stakes in Wales, but it has a chance to cement a place as the country\u2019s summer sport.<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is the message from Hugh Morris, Glamorgan County Cricket Club\u2019s former captain and newly appointed chief executive and director of cricket.<br \/>\nHe was speaking at a Cricket Wales and Glamorgan road show at the SWALEC stadium and was joined on a panel by Cricket Wales chief executive Peter Hybart, Glamorgan captains Jim Allenby and Mark Wallace and coach Toby Radford.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3679\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/roadshow-2crop.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3679 \" alt=\"roadshow 2crop\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/roadshow-2crop-300x193.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3679 \" alt=\"roadshow 2crop\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/roadshow-2crop-300x193.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Hugh Morris spoke to a fans forum last night at the SWALEC stadium<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMr Morris, who was part of an England and Wales Cricket Board hierarchy who oversaw three consecutive Ashes victories, has returned to his home county looking to galvanise Welsh cricket both professionally and locally.<br \/>\nHe has only been back in Cardiff for 10 weeks, but is already shaping the blueprint for the future of Welsh cricket, he said: \u201cThe idea behind the seven cricket road shows is to try and spread the gospel of cricket.<br \/>\n\u201cThe club game in Wales is in a vibrant state but we must continually be looking to engage as many people in the sport as possible.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Morris conceded cricket will always be a weaker relation in Wales but there is a window in which it could really flourish, he said: \u201cWe are never going to be able to compete with rugby and football here in Cardiff.\u201cWhat we do have though is a period from May to September where we have a great opportunity to establish cricket as the nation\u2019s summer sport.\u201d<br \/>\nGlamorgan were founded in 1888, yet despite a proud cricketing tradition the sport wasn\u2019t fully ingrained into the national psyche, and Cardiff treated as a first class venue, until the SWALEC stadium made its test match debut in the 2009 Ashes series.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3683\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/swalecashes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3683 \" alt=\"swalecashes\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/swalecashes-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3683 \" alt=\"swalecashes\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/swalecashes-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The SWALEC stadium made its test match debut in the first Ashes test of the 2009 series<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMr Morris is fully aware of how vital holding international fixtures is to clubs like Glamorgan, he said: \u201cAs a club we are a very important member of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and this membership is vital to us.<br \/>\n\u201cIt gives us access to international fixtures which is the lifeblood of the club\u2019s finances. We have a one-day game against India at the end of the summer and we are holding an Ashes test next year.<br \/>\n\u201cCricket like this is integral to Glamorgan, and we are currently putting together our bid for the post-2016 international programme.\u201d<br \/>\nAs well as the arrival of Hugh Morris Glamorgan have also welcomed a new head coach, Toby Radford, who was part of a West Indies set up who oversaw victory in the 2012 T20 World Cup.<br \/>\nWhile Radford, who hails from Glamorgan, is looking for short-term success he also recognises the need to put in place a longer-term plan to try and create a Welsh cricketing legacy.
