They also hope to label the trees and add new signs to the park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I first saw the state of the park in 2017, I was shocked\u201d, Mrs Pearce said. \u201cThere was litter, it had become a trouble spot used for illicit purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Roberts said: \u201cDue to council cutbacks the garden was left in disrepair without a designated ranger. There are almost 300 parks. Without the 20-odd \u2018friends of\u2019 groups we work with, we\u2019d be pretty stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Pat Jeremy, 66, and Nicola Callan, 51, Whitchurch volunteers for the group, attended a working party on Tuesday, 19 November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mrs Jeremy said: \u201cIt\u2019s like a secret garden. I haven\u2019t before but in summer I\u2019d want to bring a book and read here. It\u2019s quite serene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used to play in here as a child\u201d, Mrs Callan added. \u201cThere\u2019s a friendship across Whitchurch \u2013 everyone wants the best for the \/><\/noscript><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council\u2019s parks department took on St Mary\u2019s Gardens in 1972 and made it into a mini arboretum which won the Wales in Bloom award in 1974.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It was a churchyard between the 16<sup>th <\/sup>and early-20<sup>th <\/sup>centuries, with the foundations of the old church still visible and old gravestones used as paving slabs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But after years of budget cuts to local governments in the UK, the garden lost its designated park ranger and became overgrown. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mrs Pearce said: \u201cIn the 1970s the local authority did such a great job on it \u2013 it\u2019s sad. Their resources are so hugely stretched. That has had a very troubling effect on this park.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A Cardiff Council spokesman said: \u201cWe are grateful for the time and energy community groups generously volunteer to support the work done by our dedicated parks team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sense of ownership they feel for their local green spaces can have really positive benefits.
