{"id":38411,"date":"2019-11-26T15:42:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-26T15:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=38411"},"modified":"2019-11-26T15:42:37","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T15:42:37","slug":"radyr-student-shadows-lord-mayor-at-royal-gun-salute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/11\/26\/radyr-student-shadows-lord-mayor-at-royal-gun-salute\/","title":{"rendered":"Radyr student shadows Lord Mayor at Royal Gun Salute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cadet Sergeant Major Bethan Harris chosen after progressing through seven ranks in just five years&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>A STUDENT at Radyr Comprehensive School shadowed the Lord Mayor at the Lord Lieutenant Royal Gun Salute, in celebration of Prince Charles\u2019 71<sup>st<\/sup> birthday.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Bethan Harris, 16, was awarded a Lord Lieutenant\u2019s Cadet position for her commitment and hard work since joining the army cadets.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Lord Lieutenant is the Queen\u2019s representative for civic matters in the county, and their chosen cadets represent South Glamorgan at events alongside high-ranking army members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt really empowered. I was quite nervous, but they were all really welcoming,\u201d said Bethan.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning, cadets was just something to do. She has travelled all around the UK and to France and Belgium. Cadets has given Beth the opportunity and courage to travel without mum and dad by her side.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dr John Roe, Director of Radyr Comprehensive School Sixth Form, said: \u201cWe are incredibly proud of Bethan and we were thrilled when she was chosen.&nbsp; She is a fantastic role model for our younger students.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations to yr 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/radyrcs?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@radyrcs<\/a> students Bethan Harris who attended the Lord Lieutenant Cadet Event &#8211; Royal Gun Salute <br>Bethan was chosen to be the Queens&#39; representative for Dyfed &amp; Glamorgan. Bethan is pictured with the Lord Mayor and the Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ImqhFaDrxk\">pic.twitter.com\/ImqhFaDrxk<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Radyr Sixth Form (@RadyrSixthForm) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RadyrSixthForm\/status\/1195052736577978374?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 14, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>As well as regular training, Bethan spends some weekends at Sennybridge, Brecon, learning to use equipment such as flares and rifles.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>She is open about mental health struggles, and says that the Cadets is a very supportive place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s character building, I have found that its really helped me to find who I am now. It took me away from everything else and shaped me, and made me more independent,\u201d said Bethan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Major Kris Hawkins, a Company Commander for Dyfed and Glamorgan Army Cadet Force, said: \u201cI nominated Bethan for this prestigious appointment as she is an outstanding young person. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;She has shown herself to be a great example of young people contributing  to their community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Bethan is also passionate about increasing gender diversity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was pushing for a girls\u2019 rugby team through cadets and they decided to make one, so I have been the captain of the girls\u2019 Wales team two years in a row now. All of that helped me get this Lord Lieutenant award.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Having progressed through seven ranks in five years, she says the key to her success is attitude, as much as skill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the hard work you put in and the amount of enthusiasm. It doesn\u2019t matter whether or not you\u2019re good at something, it\u2019s the way you look at it.
