You can\u2019t afford to pay anyone so you\u2019ve got to do more hours yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got a few shops down the road here where the rent has gone up to \u00a322,000 and that\u2019s why there\u2019s no one in them, people just can\u2019t afford it.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI suppose it\u2019s just following Pontcanna with the price of houses. Everybody thinks Pontcanna\u2019s like Notting Hill and it\u2019s really not, it\u2019s a bit more scummy than that,\u201d they said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe rents have gone up but they started low-ish anyway so it\u2019s not out of the realm. Some people are paying up to \u00a325,000 and \u00a326,000. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u00a322,000 for a shop is not madly high when you think what it could be. I think mine is low compared to a lot of other people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d be more concerned with the rent prices in the centre of town because I have no idea how some people can survive. We need to make at least \u00a345 a day just to pay the rent so with a clothes shop it\u2019s touch and go.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The shop owner believes that some businesses\u2019 ability to cover the high rent has resulted in the price increasing for everyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt depends what your business is really because \u00a31,250 a month is not a lot if you\u2019re killing it. Our rent is high for us because we struggle to pull that in on a monthly basis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s mostly forcing the smaller businesses out and the restaurants and coffee shops and bars in as they have a bigger turnover.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>With online shopping increasing, owners say there is greater pressure on high street shops to cover rent. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>David Emery, 32, owner of Stoves World Ltd. on Cowbridge Road East said: \u201cOver the last few weeks I\u2019ve noticed that there are less people shopping on the high street, there are a few shops that are quite empty at the moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I didn\u2019t have a website, I think I would be down and under by now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Federation of Small Businesses have been contacted for a comment. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Everyone thinks Pontcanna&#8217;s like Notting Hill and it&#8217;s really not, it&#8217;s a bit more scummy than that,&#8221; says one owner SMALL businesses in Pontcanna are struggling to pay high rents of up to \u00a326,000 a year, according to some shop owners.
