Generally, if we lay on things that help local children in South Wales we are overwhelmed, but we want to focus on the girls as they are underrepresented in a lot of sports and they need to know what is on offer,&#8221; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have got money there to help girls in the Canton and Grangetown area get into sport and sports they probably wouldn\u2019t have traditionally got involved in.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Starting February 1, the project consists of 10 weeks of workshops targeting BAME girls aged 10-16, aiming to encourage them to consider a future in sport.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Fantastic news, thank you <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uyqBLToOIf\">https:\/\/t.co\/uyqBLToOIf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; South Riverside Community Development Centre (@SRCDC_Cardiff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SRCDC_Cardiff\/status\/1217823309842337799?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The grant was provided from the government-managed Tampon Tax Fund, collected from the VAT on sanitary products in Britain to help grassroots organisations, often focused on women and girls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Funding is then distributed across Wales by Community Foundation Wales, who received applications from 70 organisations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When asked about why SRCDC was chosen to receive funding, communication and marketing officer Anoushka Palmer said: \u201cCulture can often restrict girls especially when it comes to sport.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis grant will challenge that stereotype, encouraging girls to try out sports that are traditionally considered as male sports.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Last year, Community Foundation Wales distributed \u00a352,125 to projects in Wales tackling issues of \u201cisolation, domestic abuse and mental health\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As for SRCDC, Mr Binnell outlined what their share of this year\u2019s grant would be spent on.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The money will go on providing some coaching sessions with Sport Wales with qualified coaches,&#8221; he said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Then there is also a bit of money there for some sessions on engagement work with the girls in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Through the homework clubs and cultural groups we work with, we&#8217;ll find out what they are interested in.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is a lot of interest.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The aim is to break perceived gender roles in sport and increase potential career aspirations. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre.jpg 620w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/Wyndham-Street-centre-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Wyndham Street Centre, managed by SRCDC, puts on events for elderly people<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is not just about enjoyment, which is great, but it is about a potential career and raising people\u2019s aspirations in sport,&#8221; Mr Binnell said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have had a lot of interest in cricket, golf and horse riding.
