Cardiff Council (@cardiffcouncil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cardiffcouncil\/status\/1217402429366579200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 15, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>However, some residents of Grangetown have accused the council of failing to consider the impact of its new plan on the residential area.<br \/> <br \/>Fozia Rehan, 45, said: \u201cIt\u2019s a complete joke \u2013 reducing the amount of cars in the city centre is just going to cause the congestion to spill out into surrounding areas.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cAny changes to the roads in the city centre will affect us \u2013 we\u2019ve seen before the horrendous impact that the closure of St Mary Street had on our roads,\u201d she continued.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cThis plan will do nothing for Grangetown, it\u2019s only going to make things worse \u2013 I\u2019m all for reducing air pollution in the city centre, but what about the people who live here?\u201d<br \/> <br \/>Another resident, who asked not to be named, argued that the proposed congestion charge will \u201chave a negative effect on everyone, except the council\u201d.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cThey\u2019ll just collect the money \u2013 that\u2019s what this proposed congestion charge is all about, it\u2019s certainly not about the environment,\u201d said the resident.<br \/> <br \/>A third added: \u201cThe council have just moved the problem instead of solving it. I think it\u2019s a stupid idea.\u201d<br \/> <br \/>Challenging these concerns, Coun Wild maintained that inner city suburbs were at the heart of the plan\u2019s modelling.<br \/> <br \/>Speaking at the launch of the White Paper, he told <em>The Cardiffian<\/em>: \u201cEverything we\u2019re doing around areas in Grangetown, Riverside and Splott are being modelled to make sure that those areas benefit from what we\u2019re doing. <br \/> <br \/>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen improvements in Grangetown in terms of the \u2018Greener Grangetown\u2019 project, and we\u2019ve tried to make a lot of changes to the parking, moving commuter parking out of there.<br \/><br \/>\u201cBut, from a transport perspective, the single best thing we can do to improve the health of those in Grangetown is to get buses and bikes through there so people don\u2019t need to drive,\u201d he added.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cI know there will be some more detailed work done with local councillors and the local community to mitigate the impact of any changes we make.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our general opinion and strategy is to provide far more residents parking &#8211; and squeeze out the commuters. But it\u2019s quite a time-consuming and more complex process than you\u2019d imagine &#8211; esp. to get it right. We\u2019re working up plans and Grangetown is a priority area for us.<\/p>&mdash; Caro Wild (@CaroWild) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaroWild\/status\/1216708787106656257?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 13, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>However, Coun Wild\u2019s assurances are disputed by Miss Rehan, who claims that the plan will only exacerbate problems she says have been caused by the \u2018Greener Grangetown\u2019 project, which was completed in October 2018.<br \/> <br \/>The \u00a32million partnership project between Cardiff Council, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales used sustainable drainage techniques to catch, clean and divert rainwater directly into the River Taff, instead of pumping it eight kilometres for treatment in the Vale of Glamorgan.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As well as creating more green space in the area, the project established Wales\u2019 first ever \u2018bicycle street\u2019 along the Taff Trail Active Travel route, and increased resident-only parking spaces.<br \/> <br \/>However, Miss Rehan argues that the supposed benefits of the scheme have not been realised in practice and claims that local residents are \u201cabsolutely livid\u201d as a result. <br \/> <br \/>\u201cI\u2019ve lived here since 1978 \u2013 until Greener Grangetown came along, there were no parking issues,\u201d she said.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cBefore the project, if I left my house 20 times in a day, then 20 times out of 20 I\u2019d come back to a place to park in front of my house. Now, you can forget it \u2013 the commuters are there all day.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cI know people near me that are afraid to leave their homes in case they lose their parking place \u2013 how sad is that?\u201d she asked.<br \/> <br \/>\u201cThe council need to sort out the parking problem here before they pile more and more onto us \u2013 we\u2019ve had enough.\u201d<br \/> <br \/>Grangetown councillor Ashley Lister is confident in the plan\u2019s success, but appreciates residents\u2019 concerns. <br \/> <br \/>\u201cAs councillors we have been having meetings with officers to discuss traffic and parking across the ward.
