{"id":39076,"date":"2020-01-28T12:25:49","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T12:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=39076"},"modified":"2020-01-28T12:25:49","modified_gmt":"2020-01-28T12:25:49","slug":"supporters-fight-to-keep-10-feet-tall-thriving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/01\/28\/supporters-fight-to-keep-10-feet-tall-thriving\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporters fight to keep 10 Feet Tall thriving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A petition to save the entertainment venue gained 800 signatures in under 48 hours <\/h3>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Feature-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"39077\" data-link=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?attachment_id=39077\" class=\"wp-image-39077\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Feature-image-1.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"39077\" data-link=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?attachment_id=39077\" class=\"wp-image-39077\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>FANS of Cardiff\u2019s 10 Feet Tall, on Church Street,&nbsp;have voiced concerns that the venue will become the latest victim in a recent string of closures of arts venues in the city.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Joe Granville, 28, of Penarth is founder and host of Tickles and Tarts, a comedy night held in The Big Top venue within 10 Feet Tall, on the first Friday of each month.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>On hearing the news of a controversial planning application to turn the site into a restaurant and commercial unit, Mr Granville set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/cardiff-and-vale-council-save-10-feet-tall-cardiff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petition<\/a> on Change.org, to save the arts venue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The petition gained 800 signatures in less than 48 hours and has now surpassed 1,000 in just a week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Granville said: &#8220;I was brought up going to live gigs. It is so sad that we are shutting these venues down.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The arts community fear a growing trend after both Gwdih\u0175, on Guilford Crescent, and Buffallo, on Windsor Place, closed their doors at the start of 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to make a noise about it\u201d, said Mr Granville. &#8220;I would like to work with anyone willing to help save it. I want to propose some ideas too. Cardiff has nowhere that&#8217;s really cool. People get inspired by attending gigs and it\u2019s how they form connections with artists and are encouraged to take up music themselves.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Committee is working hard to get to the bottom of why venues are closing and the challenges faced by businesses and artists. I want to extend the opportunity to both the staff, landlords and directors to contact me to discuss the issues.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;We\u2019re at risk of losing our thriving live music industry for the next generation&quot;<br><br>Following news of yet another live music venue closure <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bethanjenkins?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bethanjenkins<\/a>, calls for more action to tackle the root cause. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Y3WXKcM7uJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/Y3WXKcM7uJ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Dwz0YvMRZb\">pic.twitter.com\/Dwz0YvMRZb<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Welsh Parliament (@SeneddWales) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SeneddWales\/status\/1220340168781111296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 23, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Reports of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-51179104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mass resignation of the venue\u2019s staff<\/a> ,&nbsp;sent the city\u2019s arts community into chaos last week.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The resignations came after the <a href=\"https:\/\/planningonline.cardiff.gov.uk\/online-applications\/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=_CARDIFF_DCAPR_129889&amp;activeTab=summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">planning application<\/a>, allegedly submitted on behalf of the building\u2019s landlord, was brought to the attention of the company\u2019s management and staff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ex-employees announced via a public Facebook group named Save 10 Feet Tall that the news was the final straw, following several disagreements with the management team.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In a group statement, they said: \u201cWe love 10 Feet Tall but we feel we cannot work under our present directors who have refused to have any communication with us over how we feel the venue should be run. We really want our venue to thrive as a space for live music and the community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is not the end for us. Tarts]<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>While the venue appears to have reopened, mixed messages about the future of the arts events hosted there have caused much upset and confusion. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The management said in a statement last week that they were unaware of the landlord\u2019s application prior to its release and intend to continue use of the venue as part of a 10-year lease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In the statement, published across the company\u2019s official social media pages, the management said that they had \u201cno prior knowledge\u201d of the planning application.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt came as a complete shock when we found out last Friday. The Company has an ongoing lease with the landlord and it has always been our intention to carry on trading with business as usual,\u201d said the statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Looking to the future, Mr Granville said: &#8220;I love [Tickles and Tarts], it&#8217;s a real joy to run. I think we are going to stay at 10 Feet Tall for the next gig, try and keep the place alive.
