The child now speaks English, Polish, Urdu and Welsh. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The catchment area would cover most of Grangetown and Butetown and apply from 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got kids from Ely and everything here at the minute,\u201d said Bethan Robins from Grangetown, whose child attends the school. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>There is currently no\ncatchment area for the Welsh-medium primary school in Hamadryad Park. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Since opening in 2016,\nthe numbers have increased from 16 to 124 pupils. The largest class has 28 children.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Shirley Flowers, a friend of Ms Robins, said having catchment areas was a catch 22. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people should have a choice of where they want to send their children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The new area will affect some parents of children currently at Blueberry Bear\u2019s nursery, the closest independent nursery to Ysgol Hamadryad.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>One father, from St\nAthan, works near Butetown and takes his son to nursery there every day. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>If the catchment area\nis implemented and the school is oversubscribed, his son will be unlikely to get\nin.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to the consultation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/resident\/Schools-and-learning\/Schools\/Applying-for-a-school-place\/Welsh-medium-consultation\/Documents\/WM%20catchments%20202122%20consult%20eng%20fin.pdf\">document<\/a> prepared by Cardiff Council, some addresses covered by Pwll Coch and Mynydd Bychan schools will fall within the Ysgol Hamadryad area.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" excited to see a Welsh-medium school established in Butetown\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m first-language Welsh,\nand I knew other Welsh schools in my area, for example in Canton, were oversubscribed,\u201d\nshe said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Both Ms Davies and Ms\nRobins expressed concern for the younger siblings of children already at the\nschool.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got a baby, and\nI don\u2019t know whether she\u2019s going to get in, because we live closer to Pwll\nCoch,\u201d said Ms Robins. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The council document says\nthat, if a school is oversubscribed, the admissions team will prioritise, \u201cchildren\nwho have an older brother or sister attending a school, and who would no longer\nlive in the catchment area of their older child\u2019s school as a result of the\nchanges\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Flowers said it was\n\u201cawful\u201d that parents currently have to apply for their child\u2019s place in the\nYsgol Hamadryad nursery school, and then again for reception.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce a child is\naccepted into nursery, it should be allowed to keep going.
