autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The turnout was more than the group expected, and the room nearly ran out of chairs. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Alongside Penarth Youth Action, students from Stanwell School\u2019s Eco Committee also attended the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have quite enjoyed it. It now needs to be about building a community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>GPG has been at the heart of&nbsp;community projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/11\/20\/penarth-shops-sign-up-to-plastic-free-status\/\">Plastic Free Penarth<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/shoppenarth.co.uk\/\">Shop Penarth<\/a>, a loyalty card scheme to encourage residents to shop locally. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI honestly believe there has been a huge change in the town in relation to attitudes towards climate change. When I first got involved there was a lot of questioning: why are you doing this? Is it true? And I know now the whole atmosphere in relation to climate change is different,\u201d said founding member Tricia Griffiths, who chaired the group from 2009 to 2012.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven a town like Penarth has something to say about the way we take forward the whole greening agenda.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"GPG former chairs discuss the Penarth Food Festival\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yoKNpJrVfrc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"GPG former chairs discuss the Penarth Food Festival\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yoKNpJrVfrc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Anthony Slaughter, who chaired the group from 2012 \u2013 2016, set up the community orchard and was one of the main organisers of Penarth Food Festival.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe last 10 years have been one highlight after another really,\u201d said Mr Slaughter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been really rewarding watching communities work together, especially across all ages.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Representatives from Transition Monmouth, Penarth Youth Action and Steve Westlake, a psychology research student from Cardiff University, spoke at the event to inspire attendees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Westlake spoke about the importance of individual leaders being able to influence environmental change. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf our leaders appear to do something that seems difficult to them, like giving up flying, then people are going to take real notice.
