MONTH&nbsp;after opening,&nbsp;the Everyman cinema in Cardiff Bay&nbsp;threw&nbsp;a&nbsp;launch party&nbsp;for&nbsp;local businesses, staff,&nbsp;and press.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Around 200\u00a0people\u00a0attended the party at the cinema in Mermaid Quay, which is the first Everyman in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Crispin Lilly, CEO, admitted it had been a push to get the venue open by Christmas, which was why the launch&nbsp;was a month late.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr&nbsp;Lilly said he was \u201cincredibly proud\u201d of his team for getting the cinema open in time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe love being part of a regeneration,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Film previews were held in screens 1, 2 and 3<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The main treat of the event was the opportunity to preview&nbsp;Bong Joon-ho&#8217;s <em>Parasite<\/em>, <em>A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood<\/em>, directed by Marielle Heller, and <em>Queen and Slim<\/em>, directed by Melina Matsoukas.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>I chose <em>Queen and Slim<\/em>, and it did not disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In an obvious&nbsp;nod to&nbsp;<em>Bonnie and Clyde,&nbsp;<\/em>this&nbsp;film follows a couple on the run from the police, during their drive across America.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Over the course of the\u00a0movie the characters become more authentic versions of themselves,\u00a0despite the danger pursuing them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Queen,&nbsp;(played by&nbsp;Jodie Turner-Smith),&nbsp;goes from being a&nbsp;strait-laced attorney,&nbsp;to the&nbsp;kind&nbsp;of woman that jumps out of windows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Her co-star, Daniel Kaluuya&nbsp;(best&nbsp;known&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>Get Out<\/em>)<em>&nbsp;<\/em>plays a family man whose only wish is to&nbsp;secure&nbsp;his legacy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"583\" loading=\"lazy\" Slim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>As one audience member said afterwards:&nbsp;<em>Queen and Slim&nbsp;<\/em>could have been made 45 minutes shorter and kept the same message, but the wide angle shots of American countryside were very impressive. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Although the first and second rows were quite close to the screen, the Everyman sofas and armchairs made for a cosy viewing, with popcorn and sweets provided. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Lilly&nbsp;said he had been thinking about Cardiff for five years now, and it was all about finding the right location.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI first came down\u00a0here\u00a0in 2007, and I wanted the Everyman cinema to be part of the bay,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sophie Ellis, team leader for Everyman, said the event was\u00a0aimed at\u00a0\u201cgetting the brand out there\u00a0and\u00a0welcoming the community\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to create a unique experience&nbsp;that is personal and intimate.&nbsp;Our training is focussed on making the customer feel comfortable \u2013 we even bring our guests blankets!\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, this experience comes with premium price-tag.
