Credit: Diabetes UK Cymru<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>THE Senedd welcomed almost 90 people from across Wales to its first  Children and Type 1 Diabetes Day. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Cardiff event was a celebration of the achievements of young people with the condition and will be held annually.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Diabetes UK Cymru ran the event as part of the Know Type 1 campaign which aims to educate parents on the symptoms of type 1.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dai Williams, national director of Diabetes UK Cymru, said: \u201cThis is part of a long piece of work. I joined Diabetes UK 11 years ago. My son was diagnosed when he was 13 with type 1 diabetes. We almost lost him.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The GPs] kept suggesting it was his diet. He looked so ill that we insisted that we wanted to see the GP again. They said okay, you can come a week on Monday. I said, \u2018you misunderstand, we\u2019re coming down now&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cA different GP saw him, and my son went straight into intensive care. Had we left it any longer he\u2019d be dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8230;.it was a great night a celebration of the achievements of children &amp; young people with T1 &#8211; all of who came together to try and stop people being diagnosed late.<br><br>Currently 25% of children are diagnosed late with DKA<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/KnowType1?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#KnowType1<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Dude?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Dude<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/4Ts?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#4Ts<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DiabetesUKCymru?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DiabetesUKCymru<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DiabetesUK?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DiabetesUK<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hyeJ87iOvf\">https:\/\/t.co\/hyeJ87iOvf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Dai Williams (@williams_dai) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/williams_dai\/status\/1224623910857138176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 4, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Know Type 1 is spearheaded by Beth and Stuart Baldwin, from Cardiff. They began the campaign in mid-2015 after their son Peter passed away aged 13 after being diagnosed too late.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mrs Baldwin said: \u201cI\u2019m immensely proud of the team here that have made this event so successful.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cDesignating this day will help ensure that parents, schools and others start recognising early symptoms and get children tested so that what we are going through, and anyone\u2019s worst nightmare, doesn\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Type 1 Diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder for\nchildren and there are 1,400 children living with the condition in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When left undiagnosed, the condition can cause diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) which can be fatal. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>DKA occurs when the body uses fat instead of sugar for energy. This releases ketones which can make your blood acidic.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Anybody can develop the affliction at any point in their life, though the peak age for diagnosis is between 9 and 14.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Type 1 diabetes has four symptoms: going to the toilet a lot, being constantly thirsty, being tired all the time and losing weight quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>A finger-prick blood test is all that is needed for a GP to diagnose the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Williams said: \u201cType 1 is the most common of the genetic diseases. It\u2019s got absolutely nothing to do with diet at all. Credit: Diabetes UK Cymru<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Several ambassadors notable for their achievements despite being diagnosed with type 1 early in life won the Elizabeth Evans Hughes Medal, which is named after one of the first children to be given insulin.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Actors Cerith Finn and Elinor Crawley, and British sprinter Melanie Stephenson-Gray were each presented with a medal.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Amy Evans, an ex-rugby player and weightlifter for Wales, was one of those who won the medal. She was diagnosed with type 1 when she was 11. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Evans said: \u201cI didn\u2019t know I was going to get presented with the medal tonight, I was only here as an ambassador, so it was a shock to be the last one called out. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a massive honour to be recognised as someone doing great things for diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy advice to youngsters with type 1 diabetes is push for anything you want to achieve.
