{"id":3986,"date":"2015-02-10T08:22:02","date_gmt":"2015-02-10T08:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=3986"},"modified":"2015-02-10T08:22:02","modified_gmt":"2015-02-10T08:22:02","slug":"green-light-for-hydroelectric-energy-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2015\/02\/10\/green-light-for-hydroelectric-energy-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Green light for hydroelectric energy project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff <\/a>is about to get a little bit greener after the council began inviting tenderers to bid on a contract to build a hydroelectric scheme to power the equivalent of up to 550 homes.<br \/>\nOn Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff Council<\/a> received tenders from bidders to start work on a project to build a hydroelectric scheme next to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radyr.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radyr<\/a> Weir.<br \/>\nIt is hoped the scheme will be up and running by 2016.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3989\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3989 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3989 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/1-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> An artist&#8217;s impression of the project<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe project will use two 4m-wide Archimedes screws, set a cross a 10m stretch alongside the weir. The turbines will generate electrical energy that will be fed into the\u00a0 grid that supplies Cardiff, and is expected to create 1,750,000 kilowatt hours a year \u2013 enough energy to supply around 550 homes.<br \/>\nNot only will the scheme produce clean, green energy- according to council appraisal documents the scheme should pay back its building costs within 7 years of being up and running. The council can now begin considering bids, and hopes to approve a contract by March.<br \/>\nThere are even hopes it will prove &#8220;fish friendly&#8221; too, with an improved fish pass incorporated into the design. This could allow a greater number of fish to travel upstream and may even result in increase in fish stocks in the River Taf.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3990\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSCF2147.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3990 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSCF2147-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF2147\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3990 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/DSCF2147-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"DSCF2147\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radyr.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radyr Weir<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nAfter a five-year process of getting permissions head of Cardiff Council Energy Team Adam de Benedictis is pleased to see it going ahead. He said: &#8220;The River Taf offers opportunities to create constant renewable, clean sources of energy.&#8221;<br \/>\nMr de Benedictis also explained that hydroelectric energy is more commercially attractive than solar energy, but it is more difficult to get permission for. The proposal had to gain permission from Natural Resources Wales to try and make sure it would have minimal negative ecological impact.<br \/>\nCardiff Council currently spends around \u00a310million on energy each year, and is facing increasing Carbon taxes around their energy consumption alongside many other organisations in the UK. Like many other big UK cities, Cardiff is a three-planet city, meaning that three planets would be needed to support its current resource needs.<br \/>\nMr de Benedictis said: &#8220;The site at Radyr is suited for hydro electric because of the big height drop at the Weir and the flow of the river itself, the next best site in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff area<\/a> is considered to be Llandaff.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cardiff is about to get a little bit greener after the council began inviting tenderers to bid on a contract to build a hydroelectric scheme to power the equivalent of up to 550 homes.
