It\u2019s sad to say,\nbut children who fall behind in the early years generally tend to stay behind. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing that can be overlooked\nis that it\u2019s hard to read and write if you don\u2019t have language already. What\nyou need to read and write is to speak and listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>BookTrust liaise with Bookstart, which\nis funded by the Welsh Government. It provides English and Welsh book packs for\nbabies and toddlers at their respective six- and 27-month health check-up. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Margaret Holt, Bookstart co-ordinator,\nsaid: \u201cIt\u2019s nice to have these promotions to support the importance of cheering\nrhymes and songs. It\u2019s not just about the educational side, but socially and\nfor the baby\u2019s development. It creates a bond with the parent and child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mrs Holt uses bilingual books and\nrhymes in English and Welsh.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThe rhymes and songs\nparticularly are ideal ways of encouraging non-welsh speakers to enjoy the\nlanguage, since you\u2019re playing with words. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSongs break down the barrier of thinking \u2018I can\u2019t access Welsh at all&#8217;.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BookTrustCymru?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BookTrustCymru<\/a> Big Welsh Rhymetime this week &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cdflibraries?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cdflibraries<\/a> and hubs are pleased to be celebrating the importance of sharing English and Welsh rhymes and songs especially in children\u2019s early years. Some of the rhymes will engage them too \u2013 for example, <em>Round and Round the Garden<\/em>, where you show basic language repeated and the parents show by action,&#8221; said Mrs Holt.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such a lifelong skill. It\u2019s a\ngreat way to meet new people and for mums and dads who have never thought of\ncoming to the library. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe babies and parents take part with interactive things like scarves and other props.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Wales said: \u201cSinging songs and\nrhymes is a really important skill for building relationships, developing\nlanguage skills and for face to face activities, which little children need.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSongs such as <em>Little Miss Muffet<\/em>, for example, where you wouldn\u2019t hear words like &#8216;tuffets&#8217; and &#8216;curds&#8217; and &#8216;whey&#8217; anywhere else.
