If they were to close, these clubs will no longer be able to operate in Heath Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Bivin Mathew, 35, from Heath, who plays for Cardiff City Korfball expressed his frustration over the council\u2019s U-turn.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe worry is the precedent it sets. There are similar buildings in other parks around Cardiff. If the council sees this as a viable commercial opportunity, there\u2019s nothing stopping them from doing it again,\u201d he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want the message to get out there, more than just the fact that it\u2019s our club involved.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone around the nation is always pushing for people to get out there and be physically active and then you\u2019ve got local government stopping that happening.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In August 2018, Cardiff Korfball Club\noffered to take over ownership and running of the facilities, which the council\nagreed to in principle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In April last year, Cardiff Council\nstarted drafting documents for the first stage in the commercial transaction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, the club were later told the council were pursuing a commercial lease and turning the facilities into offices for Cardiff University.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Club committee member and Chair of Wales Korfball, James Wilcox, 26, who launched the petition, says his recent requests to the council for a meeting have been ignored.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe hope the council will agree to sit down with us and the councillors to discuss this properly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe understand that there\u2019s money involved in commercial leases but it\u2019s not acceptable for the council to sell off its sports facilities for short term gain.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-facebook wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-facebook\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div><script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_GB\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v7.0\" nonce=\"7aZ5c5V7\"><\/script><div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jamesanthonywilcox\/posts\/10221455190349227\" data-width=\"750\"><blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jamesanthonywilcox\/posts\/10221455190349227\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\"><p>I&#039;ve been involved in a back and forth with the local Council for almost a year now. They initially said our korfball&#8230;<\/p>Posted by <a href=\"#\" role=\"button\">James Wilcox<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jamesanthonywilcox\/posts\/10221455190349227\">Friday, 7 February 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Korfball is a team\nsport originating in the Netherlands which\ninvolves two teams of eight players.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The game is similar to netball as players\nscore points by throwing a ball into the opposition\u2019s korf (basket), which is mounted 3.5m from the\nground.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It is the world\u2019s only mixed-gender team\nsport with equal\nmale and female players in each team. Players only directly\noppose players of their own sex.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone who picks up the sport is new to it, and those of us who have played for a while remember what it was like when we first started,&#8221; said Mr Wilcox.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s one of the most welcoming sporting communities you could find and there isn\u2019t a club in the UK that would turn away a new player who wanted to try their hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Wales\u2019 first korfball club was launched in\nCardiff in 1992. The city now has nine\nteams across its four clubs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Korfball Club hoped to\nsecure a long-term lease of the facilities through a Community Asset\nTransfer (CAT).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If granted, the club would be\nresponsible for maintenance and liabilities and would be allowed to\ndevelop the facilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In 2015, Cardiff Beach\nVolleyball Club transformed a derelict Victoria\nPark bowling green into six beach\nvolleyball courts after a CAT.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The space is also now used for\nvarious community groups and events such as children\u2019s parties and band\npractices.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Korfball Club hope the council will\nreconsider so that they can achieve a similar level of success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for Cardiff Council\nsaid: \u201cThe changing\nrooms adjoining the existing offices at Heath Park are underused and have not\nbeen booked for football fixtures on a Saturday or Sunday in the last three\nyears.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cA Community Asset Transfer was considered as an initial\npossibility however, having fully assessed the viability of the proposal, the\ndecision was taken not to proceed with this and instead to secure a commercial\nlease for the premises.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to work with Cardiff City Korfball team to\nfind them a suitable alternative venue where they can develop a permanent base.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Wilcox said although the council\nclaims the building is underused, the real issue is that the facilities are not\nmade widely available.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The club proposes to improve\naccessibility in the park by making the\nspace available to local groups and sports teams for\nrecreational activities and giving the general\npublic toilet access.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The petition can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/cardiff-council-save-our-local-parks-and-sports-facilities?recruiter=562260749&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=facebook&amp;utm_campaign=share_petition&amp;recruited_by_id=3e8478d0-3b8f-11e6-bfe4-03a767daa883&amp;utm_content=starter_fb_share_content_en-gb%3Av13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Club says it\u2019s &#8216;unacceptable&#8217; for council to sell off sports facilities for short-term gain\u00a0 CARDIFF City Korfball Club have started a petition to stop the closure of sports facilities in Heath Park, after the council backtracked on its decision to lease the building to the club.&nbsp; The park\u2019s facilities are used by various groups, including korfball and archery clubs, who rely on the space for changing and storage.
