href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org.uk\/rights-respecting-schools\/getting-started\/bronze\/steps-achieving-bronze\/\">Unicef Rights Respecting School bronze award<\/a> for increasing awareness of children\u2019s rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Led by year six teacher Claire Knight, the school council at Bryn Deri Primary was renamed the School Watch Action Team.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>SWAT has led assemblies, created Rights of the Month linked to the calendar, sent letters to school governors and parents, and made informative videos. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Pupils have also raised money for BBC increase understanding of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/downloads.unicef.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/unicef-convention-rights-child-uncrc.pdf?_ga=2.72955539.1877479706.1581678730-1834270048.1581505986\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Grace in year five said: \u201cRights are the idea that we are\u00a0all equal. We have rights posted around our classrooms, like the right to access information next to the computer. I like how people in the class tell us things and we bring them to the group.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Sam in year four said: \u201cWe help people know when something is wrong and what their rights are. brynderiprimary (@brynderiprimary) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brynderiprimary\/status\/1220714397502529537?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Also this month, the school received\u00a0 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.estyn.gov.wales\/sites\/www.estyn.gov.wales\/files\/documents\/Bryn%20Deri%20Primary%20School.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">impressive Estyn inspection results<\/a> and was named a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/education\/colour-codes-schools-green-2020-17664013\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;<\/a><u><font color=\"#000117\"><font><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/education\/colour-codes-schools-green-2020-17664013\" target=\"_blank\">green standard&#8221; school<\/a><\/font><\/font><\/u> by the Welsh Government, which means it is highly effective and in need of minimum support.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Earlier, pupils were part of the Children\u2019s Commissioner for Wales Super Ambassador scheme, a similar project which is free for all schools in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Chloe, in year six,\u00a0is one of the ambassadors who has met the Children\u2019s Commissioner for Wales, Sally Holland, and now writes columns for the school newsletter.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff council launched its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Your-Council\/Strategies-plans-and-policies\/Education\/child-friendly-city\/Documents\/Child%20Friendly%20City%20Strategy%20ENGLISH%20low%20res.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Child Friendly City strategy<\/a> in 2018 to help every school in the city become a Unicef Rights Respecting School.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Bryn Deri\u2019s participation has been partly funded by the council.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Councillor Sarah Merry, cabinet member for education, employment and skills, said: \u201cI am delighted that we are on our way to ensure that every school has children&#8217;s rights embedded in their daily school life.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and be responsible active citizens who will go on to contribute to the rights respecting culture that we aim to accomplish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our strategy places the rights and voices of children and young people at the heart of Cardiff&#8217;s policies, strategies and services, involving them in decision-making and addressing the barriers which limit their life chances.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The SWAT team is now aiming for the silver award. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/vvv.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40346\" width=\"260\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/vvv.jpg 269w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/vvv-168x300.jpg 168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/vvv.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40346\" width=\"260\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/vvv.jpg 269w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/vvv-168x300.jpg 168w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>The group has displayed different rights in various parts of the school<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to move our work more into the classroom and into our everyday planning, engrained into everything that we do,\u201d said Ms Knight. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is really great for the pupils because I can see how much they enjoy doing it and knowing that they are making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bryn Deri school recognised in Unicef scheme to spread the word on child welfare A RADYR school has been awarded a Unicef Rights Respecting School bronze award for increasing awareness of children\u2019s rights.\u00a0 Led by year six teacher Claire Knight, the school council at Bryn Deri Primary was renamed the School Watch Action Team.
