Image: Edd Church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Students organised donations, paperwork and transport from Cardiff to the area where the outbreak began<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>FOUR Cardiff students have collected and shipped \u00a34,000 worth of medical masks, covers and gloves for under-supplied Chinese hospitals dealing with Coronavirus. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Supports Huangshi was set up by Cardiff University postgraduate international Public Relations students Jenny Luo, Pei Pei Zhu, Zuki Yang, and Elizabeth Yang.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>They collected the supplies to tackle the shortage of medical supplies to protect doctors and nurses in Huangshi, which is in China\u2019s Hubei province and only 62 miles away from Wuhan, where the outbreak started.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The students, all from southern China, had to get backing from the\nChinese embassy in London so they could ship the supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>They organised all the paperwork, shipping, and donations themselves, and accompanied the first batch of 30 boxes to Swansea. Image: Cardiff Supports Hangshi<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>They will then be taken to Huangshi Central Hospital \u2013 where the\nlargest number of patients are being treated in the city. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Huangshi, which has travel restrictions placed on it, is in dire\nneed of supplies because of its proximity to the locked down city of Wuhan, the\ngroup said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Luo, 28, said it was a huge challenge to organise due to flight\ncancellations, piles of customs paperwork and the need to get supplies which\nwill be accepted by the hospitals.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were staying up until four in the morning some days worrying about how to do it, and searching online for advice &#8211; it\u2019s definitely more difficult than writing essays,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Cardiff students send \u00a34,000 worth of medical supplies to coronavirus-hit Huangshi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eAcrZgVHhUs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Cardiff students send \u00a34,000 worth of medical supplies to coronavirus-hit Huangshi\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eAcrZgVHhUs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a necessary road for us. Image: Cardiff Supports Hangshi<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>They said that since it was Spring Festival in China when the\noutbreak happened, very few people were working and that added to the problem\nof short supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Items needed are masks, gloves, goggles, medical protective covers and caps for medical staff \u2013 but they must be medical-grade and more than a year in-date. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Surgical masks and the more expensive FFP2 filtered versions are\nthe supplies most in demand. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The group advise people who want to donate to contact them so the\nright supplies can be given.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Pei Pei Zhu, 23, said the high cost of some items in the UK has\nbeen a problem, with one medical overall which can only be used once costing at\nleast \u00a36. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want\nto do meaningful things and let medical workers protect themselves &#8211; they are\nfighting for us,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing\nthe news coverage, especially about older people, has made me want to help\nmore.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone\nhas been really brave in the way they\u2019ve been facing the problems.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Zhu\nadded she has friends living in Hubei, and despite the lockdowns people have\nbeen in good spirits. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Elizabeth Yang said they were surprised by the number of donations\nthey received.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was lots of uncertainty \u2013 we weren\u2019t sure how many people would\ncome out, or how much they\u2019d donate,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other concern was how to get the word out. It was really\nhard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The group used social media app WeChat to advertise the donation\ndrive to other Chinese students in Cardiff and hopes a second batch could\ninclude people from a wider audience.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>While no cases have been confirmed in Wales, nine people have coronavirus\nin England.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), COVID-19, this current strain has now killed more than 1,100 people in China. Around 45,000 people across the world have the virus, which attacks respiratory organs and can be fatal. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Public Health Wales has said anyone who has been to Wuhan or the\nHubei Province in China in the last 14 days to remain at home and call NHS\nWales on 0845 4647 or 111, even if they do not have symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It also instructed people who have shown symptoms and been to\nChina, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the\nlast 14 days to stay indoors and call the NHS. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Supports Huangshi are hoping to send a second wave of\nsupplies soon.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>If you would like to donate to the group, or find out more, contact\nthem via <a href=\"mailto:cardiff2huangshi@gmail.com\">cardiff2huangshi@gmail.com<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students organised donations, paperwork and transport from Cardiff to the area where the outbreak began FOUR Cardiff students have collected and shipped \u00a34,000 worth of medical masks, covers and gloves for under-supplied Chinese hospitals dealing with Coronavirus.
