Image: Cardiff Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The Cycleways are designed to be separated from motor vehicles and pedestrians where needed.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A Vale resident who regularly\ncycles in Cardiff and did not want to be named said: \u201cIt\u2019s important that there\nare some routes planned to get across the city, not just in and out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cClosing roads that cars\nuse to cut across the city would help. Shutting motor vehicle access to Castle\nStreet would be a good start.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAllowing cycles to start\nahead of motor vehicles \u2013 such as at the lights on Cathedral Road outside\nSophia Gardens \u2013 would also help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Tamas Foldes, 28, of\nCathays, says he regularly uses the recently built Cycleway 1 section. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince it is still under\nconstruction and somewhat crowded by people, I am more likely to use King\nEdward VII Lane when going to the City Centre, which I guess isn\u2019t ideal from a\ntraffic standpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI use the roads to get to the Student Union, but not for getting to the City Centre. \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Work started on North Road last week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>In their proposed budget\nfor 2020\/21, Cardiff Council have set aside \u00a378.4m to develop strategic cycle\nroutes, improve transportation infrastructure and encourage active travel.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Public Health Wales\nestimates that the equivalent of over 220 deaths each year among people aged\n30 and over, in the Cardiff and Vale Health Board area, can be attributed to Nitrogen dioxide&nbsp;(NO<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>) pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to NHS Wales,\nlevels of NO<sub>2&nbsp;<\/sub>in the Cardiff and Vale residential\nareas are the highest in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A legal\nrequirement has been placed on the Welsh Government, which requires the Council\nto take action to reduce NO<sub>2 <\/sub>levels to meet the legal limit set by European\nlegislation.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/resident\/Parking-roads-and-travel\/transport-policies-plans\/transport-white-paper\/Pages\/default.aspx\">transport white paper<\/a> for 2030 states that the use of funding to build cycle paths rather than\nupgrading roads or filling potholes. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Others have argued that other areas of Cardiff, including the West of the city and Rumney, have inadequate cycle path provision.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe next one will be\nCathays Terrace so there\u2019s consultation out on that at the moment,\u201d said Coun\nMackie. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve consulted with us\nas local members and they\u2019re getting ready for a consultation for the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Coun Mackie said that plans\nwould join
