Image: Edd Church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>UNIVERSITY staff in Cardiff will strike for a <a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/11\/26\/cardiff-university-staff-strike-over-perfect-storm-of-problems\/\">second time in one year<\/a> for 14 days over pay, pensions and workload \u2013 after talks between unions and employers broke down.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The walk-out will include lecturers, pastoral workers, IT\nstaff and PhD students who teach as part of their course.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff staff will join colleagues at 75 universities across the UK who are joining the University College Union (UCU) walkouts starting on 20 February. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Rachel May Phillips, a 27-year-old PhD student at Cardiff\nUniversity, said she is striking again as a last resort so talks can resume. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried I won\u2019t be able to sustain my job, as I want to\nstart a family soon,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am striking both for my future and the current state of the\nindustry. Image: Edd Church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Some students, including James Wallice, 20, have expressed\nconcerns about the effects the strikes may have on them. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Wallice, an international relations and politics student\nat Cardiff University, said: \u201cWhilst I completely sympathise with the reasons\nbehind the action, we must remember that it\u2019s students that are facing the\nharsh reality of strikes. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cLecturer-student time has been drastically cut, lectures\nare being missed and students are out of pocket. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other day we received reports that final year students\nmight miss their graduation because so much of their final year has been missed\ndue to strike action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Wallice was referring to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffstudentmedia.co.uk\/gairrhydd\/breaking-cardiff-su-president-says-some-students-will-not-be-able-to-graduate-this-year-due-to-strikes\/\">leaked email sent by Cardiff Students\u2019 Union President Jackie Yip<\/a>, in which Ms Yip said some of her students may not graduate due to missed teaching.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, Ms Yip told student newspaper Ghair Rhydd: \u201cThere\u2019s\nno clear definitive answer on what these impacts will be, that\u2019s why we haven\u2019t\nspoken publicly about this yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Wallice added: \u201cThis simply isn\u2019t good enough. It\u2019s\nabsolutely vital all parties, including the Students\u2019 Union, come to the table\nand thrash out an amicable agreement as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Phillips said she understands the worries, having been a masters\u2019 student affected by the 2018 UCU strikes. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like a lot of students\nsupport the reasons for it but are frustrated by the strike itself, that they\naren\u2019t getting what they paid for,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to talk about university as a product,\nwhich I don\u2019t like doing, what they\u2019re getting is sub-standard because staff\nmembers are stressed, sick, overworked, and underpaid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Antonia Elizabeth, a 21-year-old masters student at\nCardiff University, said she supports the strikes despite the disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cLecturers and professional services staff work do around two days a week of unpaid work, which is out of contract,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI truly don\u2019t think an institution that values its staff so little can provide the world class education you\u2019re promised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A Cardiff University spokesperson\nsaid: \u201cWhilst we fully respect the right of staff to take part in legal\nindustrial action our priority is providing education for our students. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe University cannot resolve these issues on its own.
