Mike &#8220;Northerner&#8221; Houghton talks me through the line-up and gives an insight into the complex origins of their customary darting nicknames.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWell, I\u2019m from Lancashire,\u201d he begins. \u201cThen you\u2019ve got Andy \u2018Angry\u2019 Heard \u2013 he chose that name himself actually \u2013 he gets a bit mad.<br \/><br \/>\u201cMartin \u2018Grampy\u2019 Grist over there just became a grandad, and Kris \u2018The Handyman\u2019 Evans? Well \u2026 he\u2019s a handyman.<br \/><br \/>\u201cAndy \u2018Deliverdroo\u2019 Lovell is an interesting one \u2013 he used to deliver bacon sandwiches to his hungover colleagues at work, and he always delivers with his darts.<br \/><br \/>\u201cFinally, Thomas \u2018Sarge\u2019 Sargent \u2013 actually you can probably work that one out for yourself.\u201d<br \/><br \/>All these aliases are emblazoned on the back of the team\u2019s snazzy new shirts, which they are modelling for the first time tonight after some earlier hiccups.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWell Grampy Grist ordered them originally, and we paid \u00a330 each,\u201d says Sarge, as Martin looks on sheepishly.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThey all had a big dartboard on the back, but it was missing an 18 and just had two 13s instead!\u201d he laughs. \u201cSo we\u2019ve had to wait a bit longer for these ones\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Classic <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/awayday?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#awayday<\/a>, we&#39;re stuck in traffic. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Grangetown?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Grangetown<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cardiff?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cardiff<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FR5sozdBSu\">pic.twitter.com\/FR5sozdBSu<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Grange Darts (@grangedarts) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/grangedarts\/status\/1229495774448361475?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Soon, the attention turns to the game in hand. Having lost 8-1 in their first encounter with the Wolfpack, Mike doesn\u2019t have particularly high hopes.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThey\u2019re a really good team, so I\u2019ll be happy to come away with some points,\u201d he smiles.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIf we win, well that\u2019s a Tuesday off work job!\u201d<br \/><br \/>So, to the oche. Deliverdroo is up against Wolfpack captain Lee White in the opening leg.<br \/><br \/>It\u2019s a shaky start from both competitors, with the air turning blue almost immediately. Attention turns to Andy, a man who just two weeks ago topped the league\u2019s individual standings.<br \/><br \/>He exhales loudly and composes himself before making his way to the oche. \u201cNerves are my big thing,\u201d he\u2019d told me earlier in the night.<br \/><br \/>Martin leans in towards me and places a finger to his temple: \u201cSo much of darts is up here \u2013 it\u2019s all about controlling your nerves.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThey could come from your results last week, or how work is going, it could be anything \u2013 but you can\u2019t let them get on top of you.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Andy doesn\u2019t, and blows away his opponent with an assured performance to take a 2-0 win. Relief washes over him.<br \/><br \/>\u201cEverybody wants to win,\u201d he tells me as he returns to the Grange corner to congratulations and a welcomed drink. \u201cI don\u2019t believe anyone who says they don\u2019t mind losing here.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThe Canton lot are obviously a great bunch of boys, so we support them however we can, but when it\u2019s getting close like it is now, the banter eases off and the pressure can get to you.\u201d<br \/><br \/>It\u2019s 3-2 to the Wolfpack now. Mike\u2019s wish of some points has been fulfilled, but he can\u2019t tie the game up as he\u2019s defeated 2-0 by The Canton\u2019s in-form Adrian Offer. And he knows that we\u2019re here for him, even if he just wants a chat.<br \/><br \/>\u201cThinking about it, tonight I wasn\u2019t feeling great and Mike asked me if I was okay. It\u2019s really reassuring to feel that support and have people looking out for you.\u201d<br \/><br \/>I\u2019ve only been here a couple of hours, but I can feel the support too. It\u2019s subtle; smiles and fist bumps and encouraging words. It&#8217;s clear that this is a team of loving friends, not just a hastily assembled group of individuals.<br \/><br \/>For now though, there\u2019s a giant to kill, and with snacks scoffed, Mike and Deliverdroo are up in the first of three doubles matches. No sweat \u2013 they storm down from 701 in a matter of moments to take the single-leg win.<br \/><br \/>\u201cWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!\u201d The cheers from a raucous Sarge climb above all others in the Grange end.<br \/><br \/>\u201cRight,\u201d Mike laughs. \u201cLet\u2019s rattle through this lads, we need Sarge on the board as soon as possible.\u201d<br \/><br \/>Angry Andy and Handyman Kris are next, and both hold their nerve to move to a checkout of 40. Andy steps up, cool as you like, and watches his dart nestle just inside the perimeters of the double 20 to tie the game 4-4.<br \/><br \/>One side of the pub erupts again \u2013 they couldn\u2019t, could they?<br \/><br \/>The banterometer has dropped to absolute zero. The tension is palpable as Martin and Sarge take to the oche for the deciding game.<br \/><br \/>Sarge steps up. One, followed by another one. There are concerned sighs. Then \u2013 bang \u2013 treble twenty. Remarkably, he does this twice in a row. Game on.<br \/><br \/>Martin shows his experience with a classy 121, but The Canton race ahead, hitting 78 to require a checkout of 32.<br \/><br \/>After a missed opportunity to close the gap further, Martin and Sarge can only watch as the Wolfpack\u2019s dart finds double 16 to seal victory for the league leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ok, so, we finished the night with a 5-4 loss, but that was against the top of the league who in our 1st meet thumped us 8-1. So a good result. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BeKind?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BeKind<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Grange Darts (@grangedarts) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/grangedarts\/status\/1229535023726047238?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 17, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The Baa Baa\u2019s disappointment doesn\u2019t last for long though \u2013 it\u2019s been a really fun night. <br \/><br \/>\u201cExactly what I needed,\u201d says Andy, beaming.<br \/><br \/>After a roaring three cheers is exchanged between the two sides, I head off, and realise that I need to alter my earlier conclusion on what nights like these are all about.<br \/><br \/>Yes, grassroots darts IS about blokes playing a game, having a laugh and enjoying a few pints, but it is also so much more than that.<br \/><br \/>It\u2019s a support network \u2013 a way of checking in on your mates, opening up about your feelings, or even distracting yourself from the pressures of everyday life.<br \/><br \/>With male suicide rates in the UK continuing to rise, it is so important that blokes continue to come together and support each other through initiatives such as these.<br \/><br \/>While there was no win for the Baa Baas this week, they can take solace in the fact that they embody the best of grassroots sport: fun, friendship, and a good few pints. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An evening with the Baa Baas shows the best of grassroots teams IT&#8217;S 8pm on Monday night and the big game awaits.
