{"id":40953,"date":"2020-02-21T15:39:38","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T15:39:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=40953"},"modified":"2020-02-21T15:39:38","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T15:39:38","slug":"green-public-transport-plan-not-enough-to-lure-ev-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/02\/21\/green-public-transport-plan-not-enough-to-lure-ev-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Green public transport plan not enough to lure EV drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unreliability and inconvenience put off those already taking a stand for environment<\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Green public transport plan not enough to lure EV drivers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sq2eDXGuxk0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Green public transport plan not enough to lure EV drivers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sq2eDXGuxk0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><figcaption><em>Green EV plan not enough to lure EV drivers<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>PLANS to discourage traffic in Cardiff city centre are not enough for drivers of electric vehicles (EVs) to abandon their cars for green public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year Cardiff Council released its Transport Vision to 2030, a paper which&nbsp;outlines how the council intends to deliver on&nbsp;public transport&nbsp;investments such as expanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/02\/14\/cardiffs-green-affordable-public-transport-plans-praised-in-parliament\/\">South Wales Metro&nbsp;into Cardiff<\/a>, switching to electric buses&nbsp;and re-prioritising&nbsp;the city\u2019s streets to cater for cyclists and walkers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The plans are intended to help tackle climate change, reduce congestion and improve air quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;some of those who&nbsp;already drive electric vehicles around Cardiff&nbsp;say they are unlikely to make the switch to public transport, and electric vehicle sales figures for the UK suggest the feeling is mutual nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Helena&nbsp;Thomas, 38, is a&nbsp;receptionist at a&nbsp;doctor&#8217;s&nbsp;surgery&nbsp;in&nbsp;Cardiff Bay.&nbsp;Mrs&nbsp;Thomas has owned an electric car for&nbsp;nearly three years&nbsp;and said that the environment was the main factor in switching from her old gas&nbsp;guzzler.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad to see the council pushing for greener public transport but there\u2019s no guarantee it will be as reliable as it needs to be,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI spend a lot of time running&nbsp;around, playing taxi driver for my kids, etc. I&nbsp;often need to be somewhere at the drop of a hat and public transport doesn\u2019t&nbsp;always&nbsp;allow that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe environment was the biggest factor in buying an electric car. The year&#8217;s figures to date have seen more than 36,600 electric vehicles sold, of which 60% are pure-electric.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>As a result of sustained government and private investment, the UK network of EV charging points is also expanding. However, it&#8217;s stance on congestion is that it needs to be \u201cseriously addressed.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Carl Roberts, 29, a&nbsp;mechanical engineer from Riverside has owed an electric vehicle for about six months and&nbsp;recognises&nbsp;the problem with congestion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI don\u2019t use public transport&nbsp;at all&nbsp;now, it\u2019s&nbsp;usually late&nbsp;and&nbsp;just as busy as the roads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf improvements are&nbsp;made,&nbsp;I\u2019d probably use public transport for rush hour commutes to avoid peak traffic, but I enjoy driving and&nbsp;I\u2019ll&nbsp;be sticking with&nbsp;my electric car&nbsp;for&nbsp;quieter&nbsp;periods.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unreliability and inconvenience put off those already taking a stand for environment PLANS to discourage traffic in Cardiff city centre are not enough for drivers of electric vehicles (EVs) to abandon their cars for green public transport.
