Anything could happen to them late at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Matt Clench, 23, of Malefant Street in Cathays agreed the changes could make people more vulnerable while walking home. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut regardless of what it costs, you\u2019d still pay if you need to get home,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Towns such as Merthyr Tydfil and\nCaerphilly already charge extra fare from 8pm.<\/p>\n\n\n<table class=\"wp-block-table\"><tbody><tr><td>\n  <strong>Authority<\/strong>\n  <\/td><td>   <strong>Cost of 2-mile journey<\/strong>   <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Watford\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a38.40\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  London\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a37.80\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Exeter\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a36.60\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Dragon Proposed Tariff\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a36.40\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Cardiff (Current Tariff)\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a36.10\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Vale of Glamorgan\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a36.00\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Swansea\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a35.70\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Caerphilly\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a35.40\n  <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\n  Merthyr Tydfil\n  <\/td><td>\n  \u00a34.50\n  <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table>\n\n\n<p>The proposed increase would be around 5%. This is above the rate of inflation, but taxi drivers argue that the rising cost of fuel offsets this.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Driver Tayeful Islam, 36, said: \u201cIn\none year I spent more than \u00a31,000 driving a taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaxi drivers are definitely making less money than when I started four and a half years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Coun Michael proposed the increase when it was discussed in cabinet on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTaxi drivers are telling me they\u2019re having difficulty making a real wage and this increase will help them towards that,\u201d said Coun Michael.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dragon Taxis proposes taxi fare increase on behalf of all Hackney Carriage drivers. I could drive another taxi for much cheaper, but I drive a Hackney for the safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Some drivers are concerned that the\nfare rise will make it even harder to compete with organisations such as Uber.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Islam believes the consistency of taxi prices give them an advantage over Uber.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ali Ahmed, 24, said: \u201cIf they increase\nthe prices, the customers won\u2019t use us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>When asked how taxis are comparing to Uber with the current prices, Dragon Taxis driver Abdel Kadir, 59, added: \u201cUber kill us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Coun Michael was not too sympathetic.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re a legal company who have a licence to operate and there\u2019s nothing we or anyone else can do about it.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe quicker that the taxi drivers understand that the better it will be for them instead of moaning about it.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cardiff councillor backs struggling drivers lobbying for higher rate from 10pm TAXI drivers have asked Cardiff council to raise the fare for all hackney carriages and start charging \u00a31 extra from 10pm instead of from midnight.
