There\nwill also be advice, information and signposting to help prevent falling.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>People aged 65 and older have the\nhighest risk of falling, with 30% of people older than 65 and 50% of people\nolder than 80 falling at least once a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In 2020,\nPublic Health Wales estimate that 132,000 older people will fall more than once\nin their home and 7,750 older people will be hospitalised following a fall.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Falls are estimated to cost the NHS more than \u00a32.3bn per year.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Falls Awareness Week is aimed at people\nat risk of falling, those who fear they could have a fall, and families with\nelderly relatives who want to help them avoid having a fall. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany falls are avoidable with some simple steps, such as\nexercise to improve strength and balance, and removing clutter in the home\nwhich can be a trip hazard\u201d, Ms Yau added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Previous years has seen the campaign targeted at GP practices, with practices talking to their patients about falls, and putting up information stands in their reception areas. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Pharmacies have also taken part in the past, providing information to their customers. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"639\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week.png 450w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week-211x300.png 211w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week-293x416.png 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week.png 450w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week-211x300.png 211w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Falls-Awareness-Week-293x416.png 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Sessions will take place in Canton Library and Penylan Library <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>But this is the first year Public Health\nWales have organised community awareness events.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have good links with colleagues in Cardiff Council who invited us to use the libraries\/hubs to host public sessions to raise awareness of falls\u201d, Ms Yau added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the sessions are a good idea.\nEducating people is important\u201d, said Gerald Hughes, 70.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe more people know about falling in\ntheir home, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just elderly people who need to\nknow about this. I hope families learn more from the sessions too\u201d, said\nShirley Davies, 76, of Llandaff.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The hubs and libraries also received\ninformation from the National Falls Prevention Task Force, who coordinate the\nevent across Wales<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The sessions will take place in Canton\nLibrary on Wednesday, February 26, 11am \u2013 12pm and Penylan Library on Friday\nFebruary 28, 11am \u2013 12pm where you can learn tips to reduce the risk of\nfalling.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Low Impact Functional Training sessions are also held in Cardiff Venues to improve health and mobility of over 50\u2019s every week.  <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Those with concerns or worries about potential slips\/trips or falls around your home but are unable to attend these sessions, can contact Cardiff Council\u2019s Independent Living Services on 029 2023 4234 or by email on <a href=\"mailto:contactils@cardiff.gov.uk\">contactils@cardiff.gov.uk<\/a>.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Falls are estimated to cost the NHS more than \u00a32.3bn per year COMMUNITY awareness events for Falls Awareness Week have been organised for the first time across Cardiff.
